Is It worth upgrading i7 950 @ 4.2ghz to a i7 4770k?

I'm not sure it is worth it.
I have the same CPU running at stock and BF4 runs fine for me on Medium. This is with a Nvidia 460GTX as well so not exactly top of the line.
My friend has an older AMD CPU (can't remember the exact model but think it's a Phenom) and an Nvidia 770GTX. He can run the game on max everything.
I think CPU effect is massively overrated for BF. It seems to be all about GPU to me.

With that 7990 and BF4, i'd say it'll be a good upgrade.

4770k oc'd would reduce the bottleneck a bit but it would be a pretty costly upgrade.

Well you will see much lower cpu use, and an increase in gpu use. Bf3/4 are two games that really benefit from an oc'd i7 with sli/xfire. How are you finding performance in those two games? I ran sli gtx 670's in the spec in sig and a 4.3ghz i7 930. Performance was much better in the hw setup, bf3/4 are two games i play a lot too.

I would do it, even at stock clocks it should produce higher frames then your current CPU due to a much higher IPC.
You also get the benfit of PCIEX 3.0, Native 6Gb SATA.....and others.
x58 stuff is getting old now and is becoming very cheap so I would get rid of your stuff now before its value really drops.
Being xmas it's the perfect time to sell too as someone would be looking for an upgrade.

No, your PC is still good, wait four Haswell-E+DDR4 2014, l,m waiting for H-E running a i7 930:4.2ghz with Sli 670.
It means you're currently limited by the CPU, and you'll get better performance from a new CPU, but nobody can tell you whether it's worth it for you! Price it up and figure out your priorities.
If you're still getting OK FPS I wouldn't bother.

Hi again, your CPU is not holding you back at 4.2ghz, if it was at 100% Load all the time in BF4 and low FPS them yes l would say it might be.

Can't believe nobody has asked this yet... What is your GPU usage when gaming? (particularly in BF4)
If it isn't in the high 90's it is probable that your CPU is bottlenecking your system.

He's already said his CPU is at 98% on all cores when playing BF4 so his GPU performance is suffering because of it.

But it would be nice to know how much though, no? If the GPU is running at 90% usage the OP might decide it isn't worth forking out for the upgrade, for example.

Yet he has not said what his GPU usage is.... so op again what is you GPU usage at at load in games like bf4?

Gpu usage would be useful to know. As an example my 670's wouldnt go over 75% in my 930 setup. That was at 1920x1200, at 2560 x 1440 or so card use would be higher.
