Thanks for taking the time i read my thread.

So im looking to build a gaming rig with a budget of about £700-£800 within the next few weeks and im trying to decide what kind of monitor i want(on a separate budget of £450-£500.

Previously i had the 120hz version of

The thing is i work for Dixons Retail/Currys and i've seen this 42" sony bravia

(Link removed) but its a SONY BRAVIA KDL42W653 Smart 42” LED TV

which i really like and i should mention here that i do watch a lot of tv online using my current comp so i would get the benefit there.

Just looking for some advice on what the best next move is, thanks.

The best next move would be to remove the competitor link. :D
(in case you didn't know, posting links to competitor sites is against the forum rules)

Other than that:
Yes, the Sony's W6 line from 2013 has been very warmly welcomed by the gaming community. Here's a link to a review:

I'm not a big fan of Sony's, but in 2013 they really did good with the W6 serie. If I hadn't already bought my Philips 42PFL6907T, I would have definitely gone with the W653 (yes, I would totally miss the Philips' Ambilight feature, but the Sony would still win the fight as a computer monitor).

For £490, that's a fairly good price. It's been £454 at its lowest point, but currently around £480 (+shipping). So you should definitely go with that (maybe try to negotiate a workers' discount, while you're at it?), and be sure to chime in once you get it and share us your thoughts on it.

I have removed the link like you suggested, thank you for that i wont soon forget it :D

The tv is listed in work for £480 at the min but i get a standard employee discount of 10%, just waiting on the january sales to kick in properly, hopefully that might shave another £50-£100 off of it.

Thanks for your input here dude, i really appreciate it :D

Oh but one thing I forgot to mention, just to make sure:
The 200Hz figure the Sony is advertising isn't the actual refresh rate. You're still limited to the regular 60Hz input signal (like practically all TVs, and even a great majority of computer monitors). The TV might use a 100/120Hz panel, but even that is only reserved for internal use, meaning there's most probably some motion interpolation, backlight strobing or black frame insertion going on, to justify the 200Hz figure. There are unofficial work-arounds to unlock a true 120Hz input signal, but they're not guaranteed to work. And a quick search from the site didn't bear any results for the W6, unfortunately...

But that doesn't mean it's bad for computer use, far from it. The 60Hz input limitation is indeed for all TVs, not just that one. Even among computer monitors, there's only a handful of monitors capable of 120Hz input. At the moment, it would seem like that specific model is actually sporting the lowest input lag ever found in LCD HDTVs. From what it seems, it's even comparable (and somewhat even competing) with computer monitors, and that says a lot.

Here's a fitting quote from the review:
Sony’s 2013 Bravias have proven to be superb gaming TVs, and the W65 is no exception. With [Scene Select] set to “Game“, the 42W653A effortlessly smashed through our existing input lag record (held by another Sony – the W8), posting a jaw-dropping figure of 14.6ms on the Leo Bodnar lag tester. Engaging [LED Motion Mode] – should you wish to do so – barely increased the lag by a mere 6ms to 20.5ms which is an excellent level of responsiveness no other non-Sony HDTVs have been capable of matching to date. Add full 4:4:4 reproduction (in [Game] and [Graphics] mode) to the equation, and we’re convinced you won’t find a better flat-screen television on which to play video games at the moment.

Outstanding, this is exactly the help i needed to choose what i want to do next. Again i cant thank you enough for your input here, especially at this ungodly hour :P

I'm also toying with the idea of buying the sony tv with a ps4 and maybe spending a little less on the comp, all depends on my budget will know that inside the month.

Also how would something like:

and

factor into this? i understand it would depend on how good a spec rig i bought and how many gfx cards i have in it. Purely academic at this point its just out of curiosity.

On a side note, what kind of Graphics card would you suggest i go for to comfortably play games on the sony? would i be better off getting two for instance?

Thank you :D

With regards to Eyefinity setups:
Can't help with that, I have no experience on those. But those two models are TN panels, which I would strongly vote against. If at all possible, always go with IPS or VA panels.

As for the rig requirement for Eyefinity:
I would think 3x 1920x1080 will take quite a lot of juice. Might be a safer bet to have SLI/Crossfire. Also, the Eyefinity would be useless for the PS4. (Unless they specifically support something like that, but at least I've never heard of it...)

Also, I'm not a big fan of multi-display setups because of the bezels. You might want to have a look at 21:9 monitors to evade the bezels:
AOC Q2963PM
Asus SonicMaster MX299Q
Asus PB298Q
NEC MultiSync EA294WMIB

They're all 2560x1080, so they're a little more forgiving on the spec requirements vs the Eyefinity. Also, they use IPS panels, which is a good thing.

As for the GPU for the Sony:
The Sony is a regular 1920x1080, so it should be OK with a single mid-range GPU. Btw, I assume you have taken into account the resolution vs size matter? I'm using my HDTV (also a 42") from a 1m distance (~3ft), and I have no problems with it, but there are people here who consider even 1920x1080 27" being too blocky. You would be better off with trying it out first. There's also a 32" version of the W653 available, which also got a "highly recommended" from the review, but isn't as good as the big brother. In any case, if the resolution vs size vs distance won't be an issue, I would certainly recommend going with the 42" version.

I see your point about the Eyefinity setup, i think that would just put me over budget on my rig if i go that route.

Thank you for the links to the 21:9 monitors, I'll definitely take those into account before i purchase.

I think i pretty much have it nailed down between

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-088-BQ&groupid=17&catid=1851

and the 42" Sony Bravia, with me leaning towards the latter for use with the ps4 :D

Thank you once again, your advice has been invaluable :D
