Built it a couple of days ago not knowing what to expect to be honest and have been pleasantly suprised. This is the spec...
Acer 4k Predator G-Sync
MSI X99 SLI Plus
Haswell E 5820k 4.2GHz
Pallit GTX 980 Super Jetstream
16Gb Crucial 2133 DDR4
Sandisk 240Gb Extreme Pro SSD
Crucial AX760 Power Supply
I initially thought about 2x 980's but I only play Warcraft, BF4 and Diablo 3 mainly. Instead I decided to invest in a GSync 4k monitor instead of the extra 980 first.
Warcraft: ultra detail and everything maxed out. Runs super smooth in all the new Draenor areas and raids. Not noticed any stutter or frame loss at all. Monitoring the frame rate it does dip to the low 50's occasionally but because of GSync this is imperceptible. Super sharp and stunning. Thoroughly happy.
BF4: I maxed out everything to ultra to start off and although it wasn't 60fps smooth it was nicely playable. After playing about ten mins the slight dips in frames even with GSync was a bit distracting. Looked through the settings and noticed I had AA on so having 4k I turned it off completely but left everything else maxed out. Bingo, super smooth and the frame counter shows a constant 59-60fps and gameplay is buttery smooth. Again it looks stunning at ultra 4k and I just wanted to gaze at the scenery! Couldn't notice any difference with AA turned off due to the sharpness of the 4k resolution.
Diablo 3: an older game now but with everything maxed out it is buttery smooth so not much to report. Again looks stunning.
Just wanted to write this for anyone else thinking about 4k gaming. Before I took the plunge I just read lots of negative reports. GSync makes the difference with one 980, if you turn it off you get the stutters and slight frame drops. Not massive but enough to annoy.
If you want 120Hz+ gaming then obviously this isn't for you but I prefer detail/clarity before extreme frames. 60fps is great for me and this setup has delivered at 4k
very happy so far.
Ps. I have not tried Crysis
