hi guys,

just looking for some advice,i have a gigabyte z87 hd3 mb with an i7 4770k overclocked to 4.3ghz @ 1.120v running at 100% load between 70-75 degrees stable.

if i use the software from gigabyte to oc the i7 using the auto tune feature it says its stable running the i7 at 4.8ghz but then the temps are way too high @ 100 degrees full load after a few mins.

i have got upto 4.5ghz stable @ 1.175v but once again @ full load the temps are in the 80's,which again i think is too high.

i have a cooler master seidon 120 v which obviously isnt the best cooler around, but my question is,is it worth getting a corsair hydro h110i gt to try and bring the temps down to an acceptable level to try and hit the 4.8ghz.

i dont play games but i do a lot of 3d rendering and animation....is it worth shelling out £110 for an increase from 4.3ghz to 4.8ghz,would i notice a difference do you think in rendering times,or is it not really worth paying out that for a very small increase in ghz??

really appreciate any advice given....cheers guys

What are you using to load the cpu to 100%? If it's Linx/IBT/Aida64/OCCT they all use AVX coding which really hammers Haswell and forces it to draw a extra 0.1v vcore if set to adaptive or offset modes. Try something like Asus Realbench and see what the temps are like. At the end of the day Haswell is a hot running cpu anyway due to Intels crap paste between the die and IHS. It's the reason that many people have de-lidded their cpu's.

Out of interest, what voltage did the auto tuning software apply for 4.8ghz?

Would be good to know what voltage it sets at 4.8 im quite sure automated overclocking always puts in more voltage than you actually needs so ideally you want to copy the settings manually and then lower them as much as you can.

as for shelling out 110 for the small increase it is not worth it

thanks for the reply pasty....its the actual 3d rendering software thats drawing 100% load on the cpu for the renders i create and animations.

i cannot be exact as to the voltage but i think it was in the region of 1.3??but im pretty sure it can be lowered manually as when i used the auto oc feature when i did it to 4.3ghz before.... which i have now,i think it put the voltage upto 1.25v......which when i did it manually i dropped it to 1.120v and its stable and running much lower temps.

See what the lowest voltage is that you need for 4.5-4.6Ghz and stick at that. If your rendering software is making it hit those temps then maybe invest in a better cooler. The Seidon 120 isn't a particulalry good cooler and is outperformed by most of the other AIO's along with some high end air coolers. There's a review and comparison with other coolers here. This seems to be a very good deal as the fans alone are normally almost a tenner each. There's also a 38mm thick radiator version here for another fiver.
