so i am in the process of building a skylake gaming pc, just wondering what you guys think would be the best processor choice in regards to gaming and general use... dont want to spend more than i need, thanks.

If you don't want to spend too much then avoid Skylake. The prices are ridiculous. The 4690k is a whopping £55 cheaper and not far behind a 6600k in terms of performance either.

Either go up to a 5820k or stick with a Haswell platform and go 4690k as others have said. Skylake is a drastic increase in cost for exceptionally little performance.

The only potential exception would be if you were on a noticeably older system with ddr2. If you have ddr3 and enough of it to reuse it then 4690k ends up even cheaper in comparison. If you have no ddr3 memory at this stage it might make sense to chose between ddr4 platforms(5820k or 6600k).

I say go Skylake. I know it's not cheap, but it's newer tech. Slylake gives a 10% to 15% increase over Haswell. Not a huge jump, but what hurts it is it's price.

X99 is much better in all multi thread and very similar in games. DX12 way more potential too.

is 5820 the best chip to go for on x99? is there one at a more reasonable price. £300 stings for a cpu.

i know im asking advice here guys but... im going to give you guys some now, skylake is the new tech with ddr4 ram etc, if im building a new pc then im clearly going to want to future proof it... so its sky lake and ddr4 alll the way for thanks very much... ps i dont have an older cpu x

Nice one. Skylake is a great chip. OC's like a boss and is the coolest running CPU I've ever owned. You'll love it!

What Skylake doesn't have DX12? Cmon man Wins 10 is great on any newer platform....x99 isn't the GOD chipset:rolleyes: Skylake is a great chip also and runs way cooler then any X99 chipset cpu:p

X99 5820k also has ddr4, 28 pci lanes instead if 16 on skylake and cheaper than the 6700k skylake, 2 more core 4 more threads, quad channel memory, 8 memory slits.

But for budget i5 6600k skylake

having fast ram isn't going to help you in games now or the future. 4690k is the best £/performance cpu for your needs. the only thing the skylake in games is maybe 1% extra minimum fps and over 10% higher price. :o your much better off putting that extra money into a better gpu.

Yeah if your a super overclocker or Benching enthusiast. Otherwise Skylake is the chip you want. It's just overpriced atm. price will come down.

Skylake is a small incremental update over Haswell that is crazily overpriced. There's nothing great about it.

It doesn't even overclock that well.

Nope my 5820k 4.5ghz 1.3v thats it on an air cooler. Easy only use mine for gaming really and they extra cores are nice in games that use them & doing other things whilst gaming.

For the past few years i tel cpus have been the cheapest when they first come out and they go up in price as time goes on.

I paid £219.99 for my 4790k. Its last gen and its still £260 now.

Look skylakes not overpriced at all

Considering the devils canyon is cheaper and comes with a heatsink though that heatsink isn't great it still is added value and cost. The skylakes do not come with one to my knowledge and cost significantly more. So what's the crack? Intel price gouging? I'm avoiding this and waiting for the tock or possibly what the extreme chips have instore when i re do my rig.
