Hi all

I drive a nearly 3 year old Porsche Cayman 2.7L. Purchased it 1 year old with only 1900 miles on the clock, from Porche Solihull, one previous owner and have now done about 8,000 miles. Iv had it 2 years in May.

Warranty runs out in May. My first MOT is also due in May. Iv been advised to have the MOT done prior to warranty running out.

Iv been offered:

1 Year extended warranty, including free 1'11 check up, £660. Reduced from £1045 apparently. (Took Porsche assistance off to get this price - Don't expect to break down in such a new car!).

2 Years, £1190. Saves me £130 rather than buying year one and they year two separately.

Would really appreciate your thoughts, though I understand warranties are a personal decision.

1) Would you pay for extra warranty
2) Does the price seem right
3) Do you have any experience with Porsche warranty
4) Does such a new car really need extended warranty these days? Or is is scaremongering/money making scheme.

:confused::confused::confused:

I'd say yes, especially with Porsche because when they do go wrong it'll cost you money.

You might get away and "save" some temporary but sooner or later a big bill will bite you.

Even on a 3 year old car, new model, with very sensible miles driven. I have read many times on here about them having engine problems/boreing issues etc etc but I assumed these are the older models that people buy which have been driven hard for years.

Short of a blast on the motorway/a-roads I drive mine pretty sensibly.

I would, simply for the peace of mind. Plus surely £1200 for two years is a steal considering parts and labour price on a Cayman? Is there an excess on each claim?

As with anything like this you're gambling, I'm not up on my Porsche parts and labour prices but I imagine it would only take one thing to go wrong for you to be back in the black on the money paid out for a years warranty.

The other option is stick the £600 in a savings account and if you don't have to use it great but if something does go wrong then it's there to soften the blow.

Over the years I made plenty of claims, the biggest one 'in' warranty was for a new headlight in the cayenne when the existing one decided to detach itself, bounce over the bonnet, into the windscreen and over the roof. Doing a lot of damage along the way, total bill was touching 10k, I paid £280 excess and got a courtesy 911 for nearly 3 weeks.

no brainer in my eyes

yes yes yes yes, or you could be like me and be £15k out of pocket if your engine fails like mine did.

yes

yes

yes

I assume your car was a much older Porsche?

Yes.

Get it bought and enjoy the car. Porsche Warranties are the best in the business and should you have an issue with your car, you'll be thankful. Also it's cheap, swap you for my 2600 one?

I do agree that if something major was to go wrong I'm sure the warranty would pay for itself.

But surly these very modern new cars should not be having engines blowing up on them etc being only 3-5 years old?!

They may be expensive but they're not infallible and like Will Gill says it's not just engines blowing that can leave you with a £ bill.

Yes will save you in the long run. Plus it'll look better when you come to sell with only Porsche receipts for work done.

You should have factored the warranty into the running costs of the car. Porsche's, even their cheap ones like you have, can throw up bills for small things that are more than your warranty. Really the price of the warranty seems very reasonable too. It's a sports car, a great one, but it can still go wrong no matter what the age. Get it bought.

modern cars go wrong just as often as older cars with the amount of tech and toys that they house! more toys = more things to go wrong and usually more expensive.

seriously, I'd buy it just for the piece of mind.

They have offered to throw in the 1'11 check for free which apparently they usually charge £216 for fixed price.

So I guess I'm getting a good deal.

I rang a second garage who quoted me same prices but insisted on charging me £216 for the 1'11 check.

We've called on the MX5 Warranty once, and that was a 10p part I think.

My 6 has had a New Turbo, New Steering Rack, New Bluetooth module since it was out of factory warranty. I think I've paid about £1000 in total extended warranty costs. If I hadn't it would've probably cost me £5k.

Not at the time it was a newish 997 c2s, I can't remember the exact dates but it was a 2005 and around 4-5 years old, I'd have to dig out all the old paperwork and heartache to get you the exact details.

But definitely not an ancient relic, I did actually get Porsche to contribute to the engine replacement thanks to a lot of forum support (and the fact we'd just bought a brand new 08 reg cayenne turbo), it was the well documented IMS issue.
