Porsche Warrenty - Would you pay for it

Not at the time it was a newish 997 c2s, I can't remember the exact dates but it was a 2005 and around 4-5 years old, I'd have to dig out all the old paperwork and heartache to get you the exact details.

But definitely not an ancient relic, I did actually get Porsche to contribute to the engine replacement thanks to a lot of forum support (and the fact we'd just bought a brand new 08 reg cayenne turbo), it was the well documented IMS issue.

Is there any way to check which cars have documented issues? Ie can I read up on what Caymans are known for...?

Um dunno, been a while since I owned one so haven't done any research recently, at the time the IMS failures were well documented, I believe bore scans etc.. are now a common test for people to pay for if they were considering the marque.

Cayman wise, I'm sure people here can chip in with more up to date info :)

Hi all

I drive a nearly 3 year old Porsche Cayman 2.7L. Purchased it 1 year old with only 1900 miles on the clock, from Porche Solihull, one previous owner and have now done about 8,000 miles. Iv had it 2 years in May.

Warranty runs out in May. My first MOT is also due in May. Iv been advised to have the MOT done prior to warranty running out.

Iv been offered:

1 Year extended warranty, including free 1'11 check up, £660. Reduced from £1045 apparently. (Took Porsche assistance off to get this price - Don't expect to break down in such a new car!).

2 Years, £1190. Saves me £130 rather than buying year one and they year two separately.

Would really appreciate your thoughts, though I understand warranties are a personal decision.

1) Would you pay for extra warranty
2) Does the price seem right
3) Do you have any experience with Porsche warranty
4) Does such a new car really need extended warranty these days? Or is is scaremongering/money making scheme.

:confused::confused::confused:

1. YES!
2. Yes
3. Yes they always sort repairs no hassle on mod free car without over-revs if engine related work.
4. Yes and no, simple things can fail which can still cost big money, door membranes failed on my 911, £640 to repair, warranty covered it.
5. One you missed, keeping warranty and servicing with Porsche means they give you very nice cars when they work on yours, I got some great cars out of them for weekends. :)

Also very very important, take the car for its MOT and service whilst it is still under current warranty and also request they do their inspection (111-point) check and anything they find request it is repaired under the current warranty. ;)

Then when it comes to buying the new warranty, you already have the check passed or any work needed doing completed and the only cost to you was the check which is around £100ish.

Then take out new warranty. :)

Even on a 3 year old car, new model, with very sensible miles driven. I have read many times on here about them having engine problems/boreing issues etc etc but I assumed these are the older models that people buy which have been driven hard for years.

Short of a blast on the motorway/a-roads I drive mine pretty sensibly.

It's not the new model. Things break no matter the cars age, that's why warranties exist in the first place!

I personally didn't get a Porsche warranty on my 2007 carrera 4S, mostly because your at the mercy of what Porsche wants fitted and you can't stray far from standard parts as well as the rejected claims that could occur. I am however in a financial position for a full hartech rebuild if needed so that's my 'warranty' if bore scoring or something else happens.

I wouldn't think you'd need a warranty on a 3 year old car however I have read it's easier to sell on with the warranty in place.

But the fact that its cheap relatively speaking means they dont go wrong very often. I'm not sure the 997.2 era onwards of 911/cayman/boxsters have any big issues with going wrong. (yes i dont have a warranty on my car, altho i did spend a lot on it last year but not sure what would have been covered).

£1200 for a two year warranty, for a Porsche.

I nearly pay more for my bmw, it's a no brainer :)

Even if it's just for the courtesy cars, it's worth it for that alone.

Yeh for that price no reason not too. I pay*almost that much a year for mine with BMW at the moment (and so far has saved me money).

YES, for 660 you may as well.

I paid £1495 for one year on my Lexus, within 6 months it had £15000 in parts. And thats on a japaneese, renowned for reliability.

Price is right, but I've never had one (from Porsche).

If you're in two minds, what about putting the money you would have spent in a savings account. On a 2014 981 I bet you'll come up trumps.

The 111 check is a waste of money, and just a vehicle for them to enforce entry requirements to cover. Some stupid examples include my Bosche battery being flagged (Vs the inferior Moll original).

What have you been getting out of them?! Usually they expect car to be dropped off am and picked up pm, never overnight. And they have only ever given me a 3.2 Cayman at best.... No 911's or anything much better than my car to write home about :(

I'm in 2 minds as to whether to get one for my "new" 06 C2S. There is no current bore scoring, but I imagine that I will need a rebuild at some stage if I keep this one long term. I have heard that the Porsche warranty doesn't cover IMS failure, which although I've apparently got the updated version on my 06 it could still fail in theory. Do they actually cover bore scoring and subsequent rebuild/engine replacement?

I'm swaying towards not getting one as the cost of the 111 point check, the inevitable 4 new tyres (N rated, but different front and rear) and the warranty cost itself is a pretty large outlay (towards a rebuild). Also, do they accept previous non-OPC services for warranty candidates? I've got some pretty decent specialists around in Birmingham which I am not at all adverse to using for servicing.

I think if it were a car that I had bought new or nearly new I wouldn't think twice about a warranty strangely enough, but as my car is over 10 years old I think I have come to terms with wear and tear... famous last words perhaps!

EDIT: I forgot the cost of a major service at the OPC.
EDIT2 : Also removing the Parrot bluetooth adaptor.

I had a boxster S, cayman, a variety of 911s, Panamera and a cayenne

I use Chiswick (london SW) Porsche if that helps :)

They cover scoring, but only on the affected side.

I understand the legal limit for tyre thread and what Porsche take as 'acceptable' is different.... Thats what they told me.

Does that mean to pass the 1'11 check my tyres thread all have to be at their higher number to pass?! Seems very unfair and would lead to me replacing 4 tyres which still have several months life left on them?

And they aint going to be cheap either right!

Hi all

Back to this again! :(

The car is now 6 years old with 30k miles (though I do intend to drive it much more in the coming years).

£700 per year for warrenty?! Or ditch it and move all servicing etc to a good local specalist?

There is a 3rd option of using the specalist for all work and buying the warrenty too. I can imagine this will result in arguments with main dealer blaming the specalist whenever its time to claim on the warrenty though!

Is it always a good idea to get the £700 pa warrenty regardless of age of car?!
