if they succeed this will be simply amazing.
"Lands-End to John o'Groats economy drive using one tank of fuel in the road car"

/awaits further news.

And back again very nearly, they reckon on around 1000 miles range on one tank at 56mph

Why does a watermark mean its all total bull? :| or am i missing something?
surely they would have the original ones with no watermarks, and pistonheads will have watermarked ones.

which one is watermarked mate? i only skimmed through them.
pics from their own site or from the news article.

i thought that journey was about 960 miles one way though?

EDIT, just multimapped it, 839.5 miles.

Ooppss my bad, thought it was nearer 650 ish, not sure where I got that from but obviously wrong.
Still hell of a journey on one tank full

It has the roof of the Batmobile, the rear end of a Jag XK cross-bred with a TVR and the front of well... i'm not too sure

Audi seemed to do ok with a tubo diesel this year and Peugeot has one for next year, I reckon in a couple of years anyone who wants to be competitive will have to go turbo diesel.

Will be interesting to see this up against the Aston and Corvette in endurance races.
Yes, especially since they are shrinking the maximum fuel tank sizes on the diesel cars. Audi only made about 75% of the fuel stops of the other cars in 2006.

even if it fulfils MOST of it's bragging rights....£60k??

the only major problem i can think of it a diesel lump is very heavy so the handling will be affected.
by how much is anyones guess until it's put down some track times.
Audi quoted that the weight of their oil burner in the race car was comparable to a similar sized version of their petrol engine. With a bit of careful design there's no reason why it should be much heavier.

This reply is not intended to imply in any way that diesel is the way forward in motor racing or that I would support it happening. I think it will ultimately kill the sights and sounds we are currently used to in the fight to win races.

Another paper car that promises to better everything else but will fail. We can all create concepts and make a model or prototype (well not all, but you get my drift), but it's when you try to put these things into mass production you realise why the (vastly more competent) competition has failed to make one…

 holy **** I think i've seen one (or a very similar car) driving around town, I even took a pic of it on my phone as I had no clue as to what it was!

will report back later with the pic!

Definately I would say, :) .

Edit:

really good article and interview here, a small snippet from said article:-

Quote from chief designer Phill Bevan;-

So while a Ferrari 360 does 8-9mpg during a race, the Iceni manages a rather more impressive 48mpg. "We can have as much fun as someone with a Porsche GT3 at 18 per cent of the cost, so environmentalists can't complain, especially as there are no carbon emissions," adds Bevan.

It is easy to live with mpg figures like that, but supercars have a reputation for costing a fortune to run and being less than practical. Bevan explains that the General Motors diesel engine has its first service at 100,000 miles and the gearbox is sealed for life. "The stainless steel chassis has a 100-year guarantee, while the Kevlar carbon fibre body means that it's a car that you can hand down to your grandchildren," he says.

From the passage you have quoted entai (and this is not a question directed at you) how can the car manage 48mpg when racing?! Even the best diesels on the road will drop well below that if you took it round a track.

Or... Pistonheads took their own pic at whatever car show that was and they decided to use it on their website? :|

Didn't Clarkson drive an audi with a big diesel engine, and got 800 miles from the one tank.

the extra gears in the 'box will allow the driver to shift up earlier, as diesels like this one have buckets of torque at very low rev's.
this will help economy no end although whether it'll let the car return figures as high as they claim is anyones guess.

sounds like a lot of crap to me, a v8 returning 60mpg and 100,000 mile services, haha, the makers must build them at night with portable suns
Well, sometimes they can be optimistic with stats.

However, I ran my 205TD on veg oil for a while, and it was faster  Dunno why, maybe it's got a higher octane rating.

60mpg isn't too hard tbh, especially from a derv. Dervs are improving also. :p It's not exactly a heavy car... infact I know someone who gets over 70mpg on motorways from a derv audi A2. Not exactly great performance, but it is doable. Put yer foot down tho, and I'm sure you could get 30mpg... Also, doing over a ton will drink the juice, but it's nice to see a derv with some grunt. :)

As far as the 100,000 mile thing, perhaps they mean "full service" ie cambelt change, etc. I'm guessing you'd still have to change the oil every 20k or so... unless it can somehow use veg oil as engine oil aswell :D

Personally, I'd love one... Not much room for shopping, but that wouldn't bother me too much. I guess road tax would be cheap due to low CO2 emissions, and tax is much much less on veg oil, but I doubt insurance would be too cheap.

What's with 8 gears tho? Overkill surely. Sequential is nice tho... I wonder if they could have a rally style gearstick?

WAHEY! Finally discovered what my mystery car was then all those months ago!!

would have never thought it was TDI from the noise it made, nice revvy supercar style noise tbh!

The early mule prototypes had a 3.2L GM derived V6 with a fancy "supertrapp" exhaust that gave a real throaty V8 sound.

GM also supplied a 5 speed manual box as well, but all that was ditched when the boss decided to go diesel.

So its real. Looks like a mock up in their press photos.

Must say it looks much better in the flesh. Especially as its not in that vile orange.

Wonder if they'll let you buy it with the petrol engine. :p
