0845 number "scam"

I dunno I've seen a bit about this recently where some people have been billed for several hour long calls which seems unlikely even if they were at fault calling it back.

Working with landlines on a daily basis I have no idea how this would work on a landline. Mobiles I'm unsure about it but still have my doubts.

hmmm
Vodafone has now recognised the scam and taken measures to ensure that calls from the numbers involved are now blocked. But it is still worth taking precautionary measures to avoid the £300 loss in case the scammers target other networks or use new numbers.

One ponders this further.
Was it only vodaphone customers?

Sounds more likely it was a dodgy app.

What I think are scams, are things like premium incoming texts. Why on earth are these even allowed.

It's so annoying when I change carrier and forget to bar these.

Fortunately charge to bill requires the user to be a bit ignorant and so I haven't had that happen to me.

I've had these hang up after a single ring calls on both my mobile and land line. I think they are just calling sequences of numbers, my land line has been ex directory for 20 years.

For mobile users, I recently found 'Should I answer' which sits in the background and automatically hangs up on any known spam phone numbers for android phones. Obviously this won't help much for iphone and landlines, but it's been a lifesaver as I'd been getting around a call a day from these people.

Sorry if this sounds like an ad or something, just wanted to link for people who would like something like this!

Not directly related to OP

But still possibly relevant to general thread.

I had a call the other day.

Didn't recognise number as being local but answered anyway (after wondering whether I should)

Dead caller (IE dead line on answering, Phone bot testing for marks I guess)

A minute later a re-call from the same number.

Him "Hello, Is that <insert My name!>

Me "Whose calling"

Him "Is that how you great potential customers?"

Me "No Its how I great people who I think are unsolicited callers trying to sell me something I neither want nor need!"

After that he got a bit ****ed and hung up!

Scammers just hate to get made! :D
