0x10c - Mojang's New Game (INDIE)

Notch is a nice guy, but as people have said, Minecraft was a once off.. he struck it extremely lucky.

As for future games, he'll always be limited as long as he uses Java. He'll be stuck making these small nimble games as that's what he is limited to.

He doesn't care, he's got enough money to do what he wants. He just enjoys writing games.

Have you seen RuneScape? That's probably the biggest game that uses Java and is by no means a "small nimble game". Sure it isn't one of the best games out there but it is quite impressive what it has accomplished using Java, not to mention it is all browser based.

My problems with Notch arise when you look at his role in the development of the game. He's lazy and unprofessional too often for my liking. Jeb (who is now in charge of Minecraft) is doing a far better job with it then Notch was after the initial Aplha success.

I'm not sure, i spent a bit of time watching him on the mojam. Sure, he mucks about on twitter a lot but when it comes down to it he can get the work done. I'm not convinced that professionalism is a necessity, or even a desired trait, for a good developer. Especially for an indie developer. You have to be doing it because you're enjoying yourself or else it's just going to end up in a massive disappointment.

am·a·teur
noun
From the French 'amateur' meaning 'lover of'. A person attached to a particular pursuit, study, science or other activity for pleasure rather than for financial benefit or professional reasons.

No, but later on in Minecrafts development he went off the boil and didn't seem to bothered about Minecraft and left it to stagnate. Jeb is doing very well with it now and seemed to do a lot of work previously on it too.

I think that I'd agree with the idea that professionalism isn't a necessity, but when you start taking and making lots of money it becomes much more common practice, I don't think you'd still call him an amateur now, or for a while he's certainly not been an amateur either.

Most of the universe has been destroyed through entrophy, it will basically be one star system or something :/ Poor premise imo.

But then add in time travel or worm holes or black holes or alien races... theres a lot you can do in a fantasy game.

The monthly fee though has immediately put me off. I'll keep an eye on it incase there's alternatives (i.e. a single player with no fee) because it sounds very interesting.

Far as I know that's exactly what it says there'll be on the site. The big question is how much you miss out on in SP mode.
