These drives got excellent reviews and from the benchmarks I've seen they're nice and fast.

Currently I have 2x 500GB drives - one for storage, one to backup that storage drive (not using RAID 1 because I want cover against software/user error as well as hardware error).

I'll be ordering two of them today/tomorrow or after Christmas as my current 500GB storage has spilled over into my unused 200GB external drive.

Have they sorted out all the firmware problems with these drives?

Also, I'm guessing my Icybox IB360 ASTUS will handle this drive as it's simply an enclosure attached to eSATA?

Am I right in saying these 1.5TB drives take around amount of power as WD5000AAKS drives (my current drives are WD5000AAKS)

Thanks,
Craig.

you'll have to search for benchmarks regarding the power usage but it will work in external esata caddies. It appears that the firmware problems have been fixed but only time will tell i guess, new drives SHOULD have the newer firmware, mine does atleast but i ordered from a competitor.

Thanks :)

Just looked at the manufacturer specifications for my old drives and the new 1.5TB drives and they both take 8 watts idle which is pretty damn good. :)

I would have thought more platters = more power. They have an extra platter compared to the WD5000AAKS.

The 5000AAKS is pretty old now, they've developed the technology since and according to the manufacturer specs they both take 8 watts idle :)
ive had one fo these for around 6 weeks now and its running well. No problems and runs fairly cool (30-33*C)

Nice. What are the speeds like in real-life terms? Did you notice a good increase in speed between the 1.5TB and your old drive?
