Hey guys,
I set up my COVID 'hobby build' over the BH weekend, did all the usual maintenance (hadn't been on since Oct 25) etc. All was going fine until bios update time... the update went fine, in terms of installation but after the first boot, the rig (32gb, 5600g, MSI B450, NVMe etc.) was starting up dog slow. Only the initial boot, in Windows it was fine.
Then I noticed the Macrium backup I had made, prior to the bios update was basically frozen whilst copying from my 4tb HD to my USB external portable. It usually averages around 50-70mb. Then explorer crashed and I could no longer see the 4tb HD
After everything had come back around, I decide to reboot - that took like ten minutes to even shutdown! I immediately suspected the mechanical drive had failed/was failing. I've owned it since new, very light use, mfg 2021. I whipped that out and put it in a USB caddy and it was fine.
I then did a few things at the same time, so bear with me - I thought I'd reset the bios, changed the cmos battery, shorted the mobo pins but I don't think I did that properly as when I eventually got back into the bios (getting to that was slow as well!) I was still showing the correct time etc.
Things were still slow with the HD connected, it was only slightly faster without it. I changed the SATA cable and eventually the port on the board. I also rolled back the bios to a previous version but one great than the version I began the weekend with.
I ran out of time in the end and had to put everything away - probably until my next leave in October (if I'm lucky, I might find some time this weekend), but is it that common for one SATA port to suddenly stop working? I realise there are a lot of variables but I'm thinking my priority when I next get the chance, will be to properly reset the bios?
Thanks.
