Its me back again with more car related questions.

My wifes 1 Series. To me it sounds very loud ( road noise ). Im not sure if its the cheap tyres that are on it or if a bearing is possibly on its way out on the front.

Whats peoples experiences with these cars? Do they sound loud on the road in general driving conditions?

If not do you maybe think a tyer upgrade be beneficial?

How do I tell if a bearing is going bad?

Thanks

It's a combination of poor soundproofing and gritty uk motorway road service.
my old F30 3 series with new CS6 tyres was incredibly loud on the motorway to the point where you could barely have a phone call at 70-75 mph (through the factory fitted Bluetooth). It was so much quieter on smooth motorways surfaces in Europe that it felt like a completely different car.
I remember test driving a F06 640D on the same M55 motorway and it was pretty much the same, insanely loud tyre roar. By comparison on the same road thr E class taxis w212 were almost dead silent...

I’ve found the F20 reasonably loud on the motorway, especially with run flats. Do you know if you have run flats on the car?
These are the tyres that are currently on the car, Aptany 225/45z r17 94w

They were on it when we got it. They look pretty much brand new!! Not a brand ive heard of before mind so no idea if they are any good!!

That'll be the typical dealer "just put a new set of tyres on it for you" supposed selling point.
(When in reality the 2mm Bridgestone, pirelli or hankook OEM tyres he just took off probably would have had better grip :D)

Michelin Pilot Sport 5 are the go to tyre, and even better with 15% off today at blackcircles

For a 118D, I'd say something like a Michelin Primacy 4+ or Goodyear Efficientgrip Performance 2 would be cheaper, more than adequate performance and probably a bit quieter again.

£15 a corner difference between the PS5 and primacy 4+ in that size.

(Whereas I just put 4x Primacy 4+ on my wife's Mini Countryman Cooper S as they were £40/corner difference in the size we needed)

I tried to buy some of these but found they were no cheaper than something like Pilot Sport 5 :(

They were over £20 a corner cheaper in that size yesterday when I looked and had the same discount available, perhaps changed overnight.

Not fortunes but cheaper nonetheless and arguably more suited where noise is perhaps more of a priority than maximum performance.

Thanks guys. Really appreciate the information. Going to invest in a new set of tyres I think.

Right next question..... CarPlay. Anyone had experience of it retrofitted into an older car? Currently the option is not available on the Mrs car. Ive had a quick google and it seems it can be done with a screen and wiring change to the headunit. Ive seen one from a brand called RoadTop. Again I dont have a clue here but the wife really liked it in her old company car so she really would like it again if at all pos

Mine is kind of noisy, but then it is the M - Sport -(2010) 120D E82 Coup , (not hatchback) and i live in the city and the roads are terrible

it is on slightly lowered suspensions being the M-Sport, i ditched any runflats on the car though i always do with BMWs as they add noise.

You can get the proper OEM version of it retroffited by a competent installer. Someone like GAretrofits can wire it and code it properly.

I'm sure you can find someone local who can do similar, they also occasionally travel up and down the country. :)
