Hi guys,

Am i right in thinking that the 1 series diesels (early versions) uses the same engine as the e46 diesels?

I am trying to figure out if it is belt or chain?

Yes the basic hardware is the same, though be aware that the latest revision to the 1 series includes some new technology to save fuel including a power down at traffic lights, which is meant to make it even more efficient overall. In addition, the 1 series may have slightly different tuning via ECU to how the engine performs within the car.

Hmm thanks for the info.

I know people on here would probably say i am mad to even consider the E87 over the E46, but i can't think why i am.

What are peoples opinions on them? The 120d might be a bit too much for me so i might give the 118d a try.

I'm 99.9% sure they are chain driven. I'd avoid the 118d as it is a bit lifeless. The 120d is far better.
