1 Year and 30k in a Peugeot - a mini review of the 508

How did you manage to get a 9 month old one with 8000 miles for £14k? Sounds like a bargain. Cheapest I can see on autotrader for similar is 17k.

28k list and worth half that in less than a year! Insane.

Think it was just the market at the time - there were plenty around when I was looking. I looked at a GT at 17k (over 30k new) and there were several of these at different dealers. This was the whole basis to my review - the value for money is absolutely superb

Seems like very good value for money if you got one for 14k less than a year old. Seems like you got very lucky with the depreciation / market value of them.

Still cant work out why the estate version's asking prices are like £3k more than the saloon's.

45mpg on a run seems quite poor, but I guess the gearbox is to blame if it's so eager to kick down all the time.

Depends on the run too, if you stick to 70 then it's up in the high 40s but tails off rapidly if you go any quicker. For a big estate it seems about right.

People with the manuals report high 40s average so it's definitely the gearbox. I don't think its the fact it changes down though, it's not THAT eager and keeping it in manual mode doesn't change it much. I'd rather have the slushbox and 45mpg than the manual and 52mpg though :)

Can you call any of its competitors interesting and inspiring? Mondeo, insignia, passat? The whole sector isn't supposed to be inspiring to car enthusiasts

Mondeos do drive very nicely with decent steering and brakes. There is an Autocar review of the Mk4 when it came out, and they rated it more fun to drive than the equivalent 3 series.

The 508 is decent enough to drive. The Mondeo is better, but its still a big car and can't hide that. To say it's better to drive than a decent engined e9x 3 series is laughable tbh (I appreciate it was written by someone else) - the motoring press in the UK have a very obvious ford bias, to the point where you'd believe their cars drive amazingly better than all their competition (which a 3 series isn't IMO, its much smaller). They don't

Mondeo is also more expensive for a equivalent spec. I'm in the same boat as the OP, need a comfortable motorway commuter with a bit of grunt.

Tbh I would have a major issue spending that kind of cash (I.e over £10k) on any car in this class as they are just not special enough (to an extent I mean badge here if I'm honest), plus they tend to drop rapidly in value, even if the example here says otherwise.

I guess it depends who/how it is ultimately funded though. They're great company cars

In a way the GT is a no brainer - insurance, fuel economy etc are all comparable with the 2.0 auto that I have. But on the other hand it's not that much quicker (drive both) and is a good few grand more to buy.

It may also be worth holding out for a facelift model (have been shipping for a month or so) - you get 180bhp and a modern 6 speed in the 2.0 and a new touch screen dab navigation system.

They're all, mondeo included, bland boxes with fairly modern design touches. I don't know how anyone could think that one is a great looking car and one is ugly. I don't understand the mentality of someone who'd be in the market for this sort of car prioritising external appearance but I seem to be in the minority there! My only concern about looks was that it was modern and smart enough to not raise any eyebrows when I arrive at a customers site - remember this is a business tool for 80% of its life.

Although saying that, the new mondeo does look particularly nice for this sort of car, but the mk4 is such a common sight that you don't even notice them any more unless they're the sportier trims
