So... I'm looking for some help/pointers from the OcUK car heads... Am looking for a Mid level saloon for roughly £10k, could stretch a bit more if there's something I really like.

I do roughly 15000 miles a year so its borderline whether to go with a Diesel or stick with a petrol. I am looking for a saloon or saloon shaped hatchback for a few reasons.

I'm not looking for flat-out performance. I'd prefer a balance of reliability and low running costs but nothing too slow or dull either.

I went for a walk around a few dealerships yesterday and saw the following:

Vauxhaul Insignia - Can pick up a far newer car than some of the alternatives. The styling on the sportier models I like.

VW Passat - Solid, reliable, great MPG. The newer model looks great, the styling on the models more in my price range is a little dull.

BMW 3 series - Solid, looks good. Would be looking at an older/higher mileage car. Are there any issues with the higher mileage diesels?

Volvo S40 - I really like the looks of the R-Design models. You seem to be able to pick up a lot of car for the money, mid level mileage and around 3-4yrs old.

Does anyone have any views on the above or can think of any others to throw into the mix?

Cheers!

Cheesr for the suggestion. I did see a few at the dealership. You do get a lot of car but I just don't seem to be able to take to the looks.

Depends on what you think of the looks but i just picked up my Skoda Superb 2009 for 9k. Its all VAG running gear and the same sort of running costs but because of its badge its a few ££ cheaper to buy. See my current thread for some pics and info

I'll take a look now mate. Are you glad you bought it?

Assuming BMW is off the scale - any thoughts on the Lexus 220D? Just browsing Autotrader.... I don't know much about Lexus but it looks really good.

Very pleased :)

As standard kit comes you get a hell of a lot chucked in for the money and its good to drive , you can get an 18T , 3.2 v6 (i think) and 2 Tdi's 140 and 170 bhp . i would definitely recommend you go drive one .

Passat cc or a6 would be where my money goes. Possibly an is220?

I think unless you are buying a performance variant then it needs to be diesel for you to not get shafted on the resale.

Edit- just saw the is220 comment above. Good cars
L but dull to drive and the performance and mpg figures aren't class leading. Great value though IMO.

You can't win really at this budget, buy a diesel and get shafted on the purchase price or end up with something older for your money, which is the effect of buying used cars with better residuals...

Superb, Mondeo or Passat would be my suggestion.
Although the Passat will make you drive into oncoming traffic it's that dull.

Avoid Volvos if you want something cheap to run.

The Volvo's can be expensive eh?

The 220d is really tickling my fancy right now. You don't see too many about and Lexus reliability has a great rep.

Is the Superb the new Mondeo on here? I just can't get on with the looks, infact it goes into my top 5 ugliest cars.

Though seeing past that, I guess it is a great car.

Does Lexus reliability extend to the 220d?

Sadly, after a bit of reading, no. It sounds like they got it wrong with the diesels in that range.

Shame - I was really getting to like the looks. I dare say some of it is internet moaning, but there's no smoke without fire.
