10.5.6 is out

I didn't realise that, but good work on getting a profit :)

I couldn't be without mine under the desk, earlier I was transcoding some video, playing a movie, compressing a huge bunch of files, playing Eve, browsing and burning a DVD. 5Gb RAM free and the CPU(s) sitting at 12% I just love that powerhouse sitting there ticking away quietly to itself.

Is it possible that my iMac is now running much hotter than it was before I updated?

Its crashed once tonight already - can it be a coincidence?

I'm not at all envious ;)

In seriousness though, there were times when I was multitasking like a mo' fo' and I admit, it feels excellent!! but I've been so busy lately that I decided to sell before it became second gen. Bit the proverbial bullet and "Got out while I could" sort of thing.

Back on topic.. full list of updates for 10.5.6.

As I understand it, "Combo" updates are better because they physically replace the old files, whereas the incremental updates only patch the existing files. The downsides are that the combos are larger to download, and usually take a day longer to surface.

Yeah I thinks that's what Apple says. All I know is that on my system (2Ghz Core Duo MacBook) EVERY incremental update broke iSync. Without fail i'd download the incremental update, find iSync broken, smite Apple, download the combo update and everything was fixed.

Then I started getting SUID errors when repairing permissions too. And we're talking loooooots of them. This even happened after I formatted the disk, reinstalled OS X and patched it up using Software Update first thing after bootup.

Thankfully a 668MB file, from Apple's servers, on a 24Mbps connection, takes less than 10mins :p

Is anyone else annoyed they removed the power saver selections when you click on the battery icon? :(

Removal of power saver selections annoys me also :( Apple please fix

I didn't know that... I only installed OSX 3 days ago, and all I've installed so far is Logic Pro...

I went from 10.5 to combo 10.5.5, then incremental up to 10.5.6...

I'm tempted to just format again and go straight for the 10.5.6 combo update but I can't be arsed as I've got everything set how I want now...

Sounds like that 10.5.6 is a bit dodgy by all reports.. So I'd expect a 10.5.7 quite quickly..

The Register has an article in this area.

Interesting, mine's fine here. S'pose you're always going to have some work and some not.

If anyone, anywhere has said that about a Microsoft patch/service pack screwing large portions of systems up... I shall eat my non-existent hat!

Face it, Apple just don't know how to update their own OS properly

No problems here. Updated via incremental update (377MB via slow 2Mbit  )

Then again, I wouldn't know about the disk permissions errors.. I rarely / if ever repair the permissions and haven't had a kernel panic since Tiger 10.4.10.

It's nice having a restore disc with 10.5.5 though :o

Touch wood (oh, I say). I've never had an kernal picnic.

It would be nice if you could get a new disc included with the incremantal updates built in, sometimes when I've done a fresh install using my 10.5 it recalls times I've had to do that with a windows disk then only to download a zillion updates.

Maybe a updated disk image, combined with your serial key to download off Apple would be nice?

Anyhoo, does anyone think we'll see 10.5.7 before SL?

Definitely. I'm shooting for a WWDC release of Snow Leopard (June).

You can just create an entire image of your machine using CCC or SuperDuper or even Disk Utility (don't quote me) and providing you have a storage medium big enough (wink, Drobo, wink) you can just restore from that. Boom, back up to a known "good" image in minutes.

I don't mind so much when the install discs have a recent version, but these days the updates seem to be hefty (400MB) :(

Is everyones Airport running ok on the 10.5.6? I'm on 10.5.4 and had Airport dropping issues when I moved to 10.5.5, just wondering whether its ok for me to upgrade, I guess I don't need to as its running sweet at the moment.

Just to keep you guys up to date..
Installed 10.5.4 thge other day on my ex girlfriends machine to solve her issues with Safari and itunes..

Now working fine.. smooth on old tech too.
I'm pretty impressed by OSX tbh.. thinking about a Mini Mac just to play about with... :)
Thanks for all your help :)
