I currently have an FTTP service offering 1 Gbps down and up. Last couple of days I’ve been looking at what I’d have to change at my end to get a 10 Gbps service if my ISP ever offered it.

So I’d need a 10 gigabit network card, some CAT 6 cable then I’d need a gateway supporting 10 Gbps over WAN and a new ONT supporting 10 Gbps as my current Genexis ONT maxes out at 1 Gbps.

I found this gateway which seems to fit the bill..

I’m sure there’s an ONT out there supporting 10 Gbps. At the moment it’s all pie in the sky anyway as I don’t think my ISP has any plans to roll out 10 Gbps.

It was interesting looking into it anyway and I learned my ONT is only capable of 1 Gbps and found a next generation gateway that would support 10 Gbps.

It's one thing upgrading your internal network but I wouldn't go updating your router, it could be a huge waste of money or you couldn't actually test it's functionality.

I have no plans to update my router, I was just seeing what’s available if 10 Gbps ever became an option.

so it would be impossible to future proof yourself now

I was advised that the DKT Comega 10 Gbps gateway I linked to above is not capable of running on a 1 Gbps ONT anyway, you have to have a 10 Gbps ONT.

They’ve got 10 Gbps in Poland already

I’m not bothered about having a 10 Gbps LAN all I want is a 10 Gbps WAN. The gateway I linked to above has 1 x 10 Gbps LAN port. I wouldn’t mind plugging my games PC with a 10 Gbps network card into it over CAT 6 Ethernet giving me 10 Gbps over the 10 Gbps WAN port out to the Internet.

My games PC has an M2 NVme SSD drive in it. Don’t need anything else connected, if I need WiFi I’d hang an access point off one of the gateways 2 x 1 Gbps LAN ports.

Anyway 10 Gbps Fibre Broadband isn’t available yet.

Are you in one of those countries?

No I’m in Jersey, we have 1 Gbps available across the whole island. I don’t subscribe to 1 Gbps but whilst we have coronavirus the ISPs here giving everyone 1 Gbps because more people working from home.

When this is over our speeds will go back to 500 mbit/s down 50 mbit/s up. I won’t upgrade to 1 Gbps as I’m happy with 500 mbit/s for £ 42.90 a month including landline rental.

If 10 Gbps was available it would be extremely expensive and I doubt I’d subscribe to it but it might push down the price of 1 Gbps

If you look at what you posted, you indicated that you thought it would improve your gaming experience. And it won't. We have 2Gbps in the office in Salford Quays and we only max it out when doing the offsite backup. Other than that it sits at about 5-10% capacity for most of the time.

I never said it would improve my gaming experience you’re putting words into my mouth, I only mentioned my games pc as if I had a laptop it wouldn’t support 10 Gbps with the built in network chipset. With my games PC I could plug in a 10 Gbps PCI-e card.

The UniFi Dream Machine Pro and the Mikrotik RB4011 both support 10Gb WAN. Actually I think there are quite a few routers out at the moment with SFP+ WAN ports.

Not quite mainstream names like ASUS, TP-Link and Netgear. I’d only heard of UniFi and Mikrotik after viewing these forums. Overclockers only sell ASUS, TP-Link and Ubiquiti

I stand corrected, no bottleneck if using an NVme for 10GBe!

If using a laptop the bottleneck is likely to be the network interface unless you’re using one of those 10 Gbps plug in devices WJA96 alluded to. Even then unless you’re using a very modern laptop I think the bottleneck would be the 2.5” SATA SSD drive.

As far as I know there are no NVme drives that fit in a laptop so you’re left with slower 2.5” SATA SSD drives as there’s no PCI-E bus slots in a laptop.

The SSD speed becomes important if you can potentially download at 1.25 GB/s over a 10 Gbps connection.

As stated, 10Gb is not at a consumer stage yet

Indeed it’s not, especially when a 10 Gbps PCI-e network card costs £ 78.74 ex VAT. Then you have to figure in the cost of a new 10 Gbps ONT, a new 10 Gbps Gateway plus on site visit and installation costs.

There’s not much choice of gateways at the moment and the one I linked to above doesn’t support WiFi therefore it’s not aimed at the consumer. The so called big boys ASUS, TP-Link and Netgear don’t appear to have any 10 Gbps products out yet.

When it eventually does become available it will be in 10/5/2.5/1Gbps increments with 1 Gbps the bog standard. That will push down the price of 1 Gbps connections.

I might be missing something. I was under the impression that Asus and Netgear had 10GbE products out

I stand corrected you are obviously a router enthusiast and know a lot more about what is on the market than I do.

The ASUS GT-AX11000 ROG Rapture is £ 316.66 ex VAT. The NETGEAR XR700-100EUS Nighthawk Pro Gaming is £ 387.70 ex VAT and the TP-Link AX11000 Tri-Band Wi-Fi 6 Gaming Router Archer is £ 342.48 ex VAT

None of which are cheap. I paid just £ 66.66 ex VAT for my current Netgear R6800 AC 1900 router.

One thing I’ve noticed is that these three routers you’ve linked to only support 2.5 Gbps WAN not 10 Gbps WAN like the one I linked to above. Do you know of any from mainstream manufacturers that offer 10 Gbps WAN.

Says in the specification of the ASUS router that it supports up to 2.5 Gbps not 10 Gbps. The 2.5 Gbps is for internet connections greater than 1 Gbps.

Then i'm sure you're right. If you plug the internet into the 10Gbps LAN port it just won't route it...

The DKT Comega 10 Gbps Gateway I linked to earlier...

https://dktcomega.com/product/10g-gateways/

Says it supports 10 Gbps Internet WAN connection and it also has a 10 Gbps LAN port. While it may not be consumer oriented with its lack of WiFi it would support a 10 Gbps Internet connection from what I can see.
