10 sec delay when playing files in Vista's Windows Media Player

are the files on your local hard drive? or a usb drive?

do you have antivirus installed, do you have windows defender real-time scanning enabled still?

I'm having the same problem. Vista Grrrr. I disabled Defenders auto scan, I though I had but I hadn't I'll see if that makes a difference.

So are you using Nero7?

I say this because I was using Nero7 and ONLY an update to the latest version resolved the exact same issue.

Once the media library becomes quite big, it'll take longer to start the 1st time, ideally just launch wmp 1st, then later open the files, wich will cause them to play immediatly in the already open wmp.
Edit: hmm might be nero too, I also recently installed nero 7, didnt really give the lag much thought, thought it was media library casing it cos i recently added 2 folders to it with 20 gb's of music...

I get a 10s ish delay when trying to play DVD's in my DVD player in PC, but not with video files from the computer itself, not sure to which you are refering too.

Could be a codec issue. Which codecs do you have? Have you tried a codec pack like "Vista codecs"? If you have codecs installed make sure media player isnt downloading codecs automatically. Untick the option this may help.
