Hey all, just a very quick question, im about to film a "10 Second Movie" my idea is thus:

The Day The Internet Went Down:

Idea 1 -

Opening with a close up of the screen saying Unable To Establish Connection, followed by zooming out to me hanging my head.

Next we see several events:

A close up of me taping my desk inpatiently (sp?)
A close up of me flicking through channels on a remote (Plus sound of channels changing)
A zoomed out shot of me pacing
A shot of me crawling into bed

Closing we see the camera finaly zoom back into the screen where it says "Connection Established"

The whole thing will be in black and white, untill the end when it turns to colour, and will simply use the sound of what im doing, e.g tapping the desk etc

Idea 2 -

Beginging - Same

This one would involve the camera not moving at all, (Bar the end and begining) and just filming me:

Pacing up and down, slumping infront of my computer repeatedly hitting connect, eating a meal, climbing into bed, but it would be firslty time lapsed so that it looked like I was doing everything realy quickly so as to fit in with 10 seconds, and secondly it would be merged.

By merged I meen you would see me doing everything at once, but sort of ghosted away a little, you would see me for example sitting at my desk, pacing, eating, crawling into bed at the same time, but they would seem linked as you would also see my moving to each different location...

Ending - Same

I have at my disposal Adobe Premier and AVID, and what I need to know is, would it be possible to create number 2, with very little knowlege of either program?

Thanks :)

Also be usefull to get peoples views on this idea as im very new to movie making!

Version 1 - Sad Ending (Still need to film with prop gun + better sound effect)

I think if you do it really well, the first one would be good.

Why are you doing it anyway, boreD?
Well I got a movie camera for christmas, and its not yet been used tbh, I still dont know how to get data from it to my pc (MiniDV and have firewire cable) :D

Haha ok then, get it done quickly i want to see how it turns out :p

Idea 2 is doable with those programs, just leave the camera recording and do all the different movements, then when you capture it split each action into different cuts and lay them over the top of each other on different video layers and adjust the opacity of each clip until it looks good.

I like the sound of idea 1 though

To get the footage onto your computer plug the firewire cable in, put the camera in play mode and open avid or premiere, then in premiere go to file>capture or with avid go to tools>capture tool, for idea 2 premiere would probably be easier to use

I wonder if its worth me doing both and seeing which comes out best.... afterall being a bit of a newbie to this im not expecting a masterpiece :p

+ You have to put up with my ugly mush

:p If you help me film it you can lmao, kinda need someone to zoom past my head, but tbh more want to do this for my website as it hasent had an update for..... about 3 months and I think it needs one, plus can finaly use my camera! Anywho now I know my idea will be possible im off to have a go so cya later ;) Learning Premier in a day for the win!

Ok I showed a couple of people what I had and they both said Dont go to bed, commit suicide... so bar the fact that I need to get a toy gun and reshoot this... here is my attempt..... Im not realy sure about it, it seems a little freeky.... even for my taste.... and I made it.... and the TV Part is a little off, im going to reshoot that in the daylight as it being dark made it go out of focus at the end!

Let me know what you like, what you hate etc please... probably hate it all :(

maybe if it was abit longer and each scene had more time it would be better, seems to flick through abit too fast

Aye I agree, but having a 10 second limit is not a lot of time, not sure what I should do, might be worth me removing the tv scene

If that's a complete first go at making a short then it's not really bad at all. :)

Couple of points that spring to mind;

- Dont use wipes. You're not George Lucas. Stick with fast-fades or straight cuts. Longer fades to show more time has passed.
- Your cuts are too fast for the soundtrack, the first shot is over far too quickly -- could barely read it.
- Shot of you tapping your fingers doesnt work. It's far too close and you can see you're ''acting''.
- Work on composing your shots better. Sticking your subject slap-bang on the centre of the frame is not the best method. This link explains composition in photography. It should be useful.
- Pointing your (gun-shaped) hand at your head.. eh?
- Gun sound at the end.. erm, what?
- Message at the end.. please.. no.

I think with a few more shots you can stretch that to a better 30 second short. Show some in-between shots (walking to the TV for example), and some more at the desk. Perhaps starting with a mid-shot of you at your desk before the screenshot would help too.

Essentially, without reading your OP i doubt i would have known what the thing was really about.

EDIT: I had a few links lying around. Go nuts.

If I could make it longer^^ Slightly less rushed but That wont be any good as its almost 3x the max time

As for above, thanks will have a read :) I agree the ending is just there for now as a place marker, and the aim will be to get something that looks like a gun, rather than my hand, and the sound effect, well I havent got anything better and no idea if there is a site that sells sounds etc that would fit, as for the transition length not to much I can do as I can only have 10 seconds of film max

Still seems the same as the first one. The extra time hasn't helped... although the head in hands bit is good.

Ok I have removed the TV part, and extended/slowed down the head in hands bit for the 10 second version, this is bang on 10 seconds when you take out the credits at the end,

Im still not sure if I should keep the ending (Suicide, will look slightly more real when not using a hand) Or go with my origional give up and gone to bed idea...

It seems a bit depresing, but what im trying to convey is that the internet takes over peoples lives, is it realy a good thing or a bad thing? (Of course I think good :p) And what would the point be for that person if someone just took there internet away

I like the new edit better, you could try putting a different shot in each of the squares when it cuts to the hand in quarters, I think that might looks quite good, or have it so top left to bottom right diagonally is the hand taping and top right to left bottom is a different shot.
