£10 to cancel auto-renew - wtf

I dont see how that is any different than running through a comparison site though. Once past expiry date you are just another potential customer.

If they say they arent going to renew. Thats ok, I didnt ask them to so there is no input from my end to be refused.

Even if it's because the insurance company have changed their criteria?

Yep, but like I said above in a post, I worked in the industry for some years and they didnt refuse much (lets not forget thats money they are turning down), they had far wider acceptable criteria for existing customers than new ones.
And again as I posted above, its not even necessarily a problem, it just means that the auto systems done by computer are not allowed to give you the policy and it needs to be checked by a human.
Computers meant that offices full of people who would historically have done that were replaced, but some things are outside the simple rules.

I suspect in years to come with AI that will cope with most refuse to renews as well.

YOu dont they do, and thats the issue

Insurance policies are written on the basis of disclosure of material facts. If they deem it a material fact to them, and its not specifically by law somethign they cannot ask, then they can ask it and you have a duty to disclose the facts.
Non disclosure of facts is grounds for voiding a policy, only in really bad cases generally, but it is grounds if its material. You can actually search complaints and see examples the ombudsman has refused or upheld on voiding if you want.

Again why does any business refuse to take on revenue earning business, something for them isn't right.

You havent refused anything. I guess is history in how the industry works (worked it could have changed) in that its generally accepted that at the end of a period of risk you will either require that risk to be undertaken by the same or a different company, when people would renew year after year it makes sense that if they were not going to offer to renew then they advise of that fact.

I coudl offer to give you my car, you cant argue you didnt ask for it, so I cant offer it.

A non offer of renewal is pretty much an insurance co saying GTFO ;)
You dont tend to say GTFO to customers worth keeping ;)

Funnily enough i've worked for Direct Line (UKI) and we used to decline cover at renewal all the time for a variety of reasons, it was standard procedure to tell customers they don't need to declare it to their new insurer that they had been declined cover because underwriting don't like them being under 25 any more for example.
