PSUs can explode, of course they can. You'd have to be living under a rock to believe they don't. Components fail, it happens. Given enough time, EVERYTHING fails. If it's a cap, which is very often the case with PSUs (though it should be noted its not often you see a big primary cap fail, it's more often the smaller caps) then that can cause instability, poor rails ect but rarely would that cause any kind of critical failure. However, if it's a different component then that's a different story. If a bridge rectifier fails closed circuit, then all hell can break loose. Likewise if a FET fails - my superflower 650w blew a FET and it was catastrophic, one PSU fit for the parts bin.

But anyway, if you have a 12 year old PSU still working A-OK, then chances are it's still going to work A-OK for some time to come. If it's a half decent PSU, then just use it till it eats itself and buy a new one.
