Morning guys,

I bought an overclocked i7 920 @ 4ghz and gigabyte ex58-ud5 from you guys in December 2009 and its still going strong, 10 years at 4ghz used very day, so any chance of a trade in? May be you could run it for another 10 years or just market it as an example of your great overclocking prowess! Still have the reciept

John

The bios files were supplied by Rich ONeil and Rob Gould and had names like GODLIKE and RELIABLE

Eventually I tweaked it up to 4.2ghz but a few years ago upgraded to 12gb ram and downclocked to 4.0ghz for stabilty.

It came with a Noctua N12 but upgraded it to a N14.

Has been running like a beast for Ten Years!

Nice conversation you are having with yourself, no idea what it is you are asking for

he wants to send his old PC in and get money off a new one.

I would say highly unlikely. they sell new parts only not second hand that is what the members market, ebay, gumtree, etc is for.

if it is still going strong then I have to ask why does he want to trade it in? you would only be looking to upgrade if it was now running like crap.

It's ok John, I understand you.

I have a i5 750 that was used as my software development machine for many years, then 6 years ago it was remade into a HTPC case running in my front room (music / films etc) and it's still running, watched 'The Dead Don't Die' on it only last night :D

stick in a x5650 for a nice boost. pick them up for less that a tenner on ebay.

This is a great cpu upgrade option, 6 cores and they clock up to 4.5ghz. These CPUs were like £1500 10 years ago and now are dirt cheap and still hold their own with scores like 1000+ in cinebench r15 is certainly no slouch.

Absolutely I'm rocking 2 machines 6 cores 12 threads no issues with any games at 4.2ghz.. go figure.

My son has my 2012 i7 920/X58-UD3R machine with an X5670 running @ a stable 4ghz...it's a bit of a "Trigger's broom" PC other than case mobo and RAM. I've just this week had to reaseat the CPU cooler with new thermal paste, but it's ticking along nicely again with a 1070Ti from MM @ 1440p.

I've just ordered another X58-UD3R mobo and 16gb ram for £146 to upgrade my daughters PC to the same spec because I bought the X5670 as part of a pair for £40.

Cheap upgrade for solid 12 thread performance.

So on the 10th anniversary I have ordered:

RYZEN 9 3900X TWELVE CORE 4.6GHZ (SOCKET AM4) PROCESSOR - RETAIL
ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR VIII HERO WI-FI (AMD AM4) DDR4 X570 CHIPSET ATX MOTHERBOARD
TEAM GROUP XTREEM " EDITION" 32GB (4X8GB) DDR4 PC4-28800C16 3600MHZ QUAD CHANNEL KIT - BLACK
Fractal DEFINE R6 BLACKOUT MIDI TOWER CASE - BLACK
Toshiba P300 3TB 3.5'' SATA High-Performance Hard Drive (OEM)
Corsair Force Series PCIe Gen.4 MP600 1TB NVMe M.2 SSD
XFX Radeon RX 5700 XT 8GB THICC III Ultra Graphics Card

13% cashback

Already have:

Corsair RM850x PSU
2 x 240gb Samsung 840 EVO
1 x 128gb Sandisk SSD
2 x 1tb Hdd
1 x 750gb Hdd
Asus Sonar Essence STX
Pioneer BDR208D BluRay Drive
Noctua NH D14

So a ten year refresh, my last system was bought from here, I would have loved for OCUK to have my money but I guess they didnt want it, I did order the DDR4 from here so fantastic!

Did order a 3950x but whilst I was waiting for 2nd layer security the item I had in my basket was sold to some one else, go figure!

So I now have a lapped i7 920 @ 4ghz, Gigabyte ex58-ud5 and 12gb 1600 mhz DDR3 that is obsolete!

Now I just need an AM4 mounting kit from Noctua and i'm done!

I'm planning to upgrade the GFX later, the THICC III is about 4% slower than a 2070 Super but £200 less, £340 cheaper than a 2080 Super which is only 15% faster at 4K, law of diminishing returns and FPS per pound says is the best card until next round of Nvidia and Radeon's

I started on Intel with a Pentium 333mhz then a 400mhz, then an Athlon Thunderbird 1 ghz, then an Athlon XP 2500+ overclocked to Xp3200+ speeds, did the same with AMD Radeon 9800 Pro which required a bios flash but then become a 9800 XT provided you fitted an a better fan unit. That lasted a few years then bought an overclocked Q6600 for a year or two before I bought my i7. I have upgrade the graphics card a few times 2 x XFX 6800 GT, Hd5850 then 2 x HD 5850, Nvidia 970, Nvidia 1070.

I always though AMD was great but it went down hill from the Athlon XP 3200+

I reckon I must get at least a 4x boost in CPU plus NV Me, SATA 6 and some power savings!

Yes i am reminiscing but I think that's good!

That was my concern. Don't get me wrong, i liked my i7 920, p6t motherboard with 6gb ram. It had been going strong for around 9.5 years before the motherboard gave out a couple of months back. Was considering replacing the motherboard but second hand motherboards for that system seem to go for around £100. So, went for a newbuild instead. Then again, if you have a working one to sell, they seem to go for a decent amount.

ps, @redrumgalaxy video encoding is over 4x as quick with a 3700x (compared to an i7 920), so a 3900x should be even better.

oh, one thing though, the i7 920 could heat a small room :p the 3700x doesn't, which in winter i kind of miss.

My i7 920 is a little older than yours and a bit less lucky. I did push it to over 4ghz myself for some epeen benchmark results but I only ran it at 3.6 day to day. A few years ago it stopped booting and I had to reduce the clock to 3.4, then a couple of years later 3.3 and now it only boots at 3.2. Could be burn in on the mobo, CPU or RAM who knows. My P6T mobo has some driver compatibility issues with windows 7 as well so I'm looking into upgrading and reading some forums like this. Things have changed in the past decade so I'll have to do a bit of learning!:)
