I'm almost set on getting an AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED.
Yes I want a macro lens for doing close ups but considering its price, I also want it to be useful for other stuff too. The VR and fast aperture will be great but I'm unsure how useful I'll find the equivalent 157mm focal length for general walkaround & candid pics.

Anyone with this a similar lens please feel free to reassure me ;)

I used to use a Sigma 105 f2.8 until it was stolen. I loved it on my D2x (which was also stolen) and found it a great general purpose lens, not just for macro.

I'm going to get the 105 VR at some point over the next month or so, mainly because I think the VR with the D3 high ISO will allow you to get some macro shots you may not have time to set up for with a tripod otherwise - although I'd always suggest using a tripod whenever possible of course.

Its quite a zoom really on a cropped factor camera but not something you cannot work with. I would add 50mm to my macro lens if it offered me VR/IS/OS

That will be hugely effective when using that lens for macros!

I am a user of the Sigma 105 F2.8
