I'm getting very high CPU usage with one of my hard disks when I try and copy stuff to and from it, this results in transfer speeds of only about 10mb/s.... WTF? Ideas anyone?

MetalStorm:

Is it a PATA or SATA HDD?

If it is a PATA HDD this issue would be caused by it running in PIO mode and not UDMA mode. If this is the case, go into Device Manager, and check it, if it is PIO mode, this has been caused by a certain number of errors (6) occuring, which causes the IDE Channel it is on to go from running UDMA mode to PIO mode on that device.

If it cannot be reset manually to UDMA mode, simply right click the IDE channel upon which the device is, and select Uninstall, OK etc, and reboot, this will have the effect of reinstalling the IDE channel and clearing the errors and setting the HDD back into UDMA mode. :)
