Hi,

My 4 year old laptop is reporting 100% CPU usage even when surfing, etc.

Also when media player is open as well as Excel, for example, the screen starts to flicker (horizontal lines). Help! :p

Check task manager to see what processes are running.
Scan for spy ware ect with spy bot and Adaware.

Screen flicker not sure on that one could be possible hardware failure, can you check cpu temps with speedfan ect.

Cheers Rob.

Got about 67 processes, up from around 54 when I last looked. RtvScan.exe and DoScan.exe are hogging the CPU, I keep having to terminate the processes when I log on. I'll check temps in a bit and post here.

Thanks.

Right, tried speedfan, realtemp, hmonitor, etc. and none will work.

My processor is a Mobile AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2400+ which is quite old and doesn't seem to work with anything lol. The only one that works is hmonitor and even that only tells me my clock speed and multiplier, which doesn't help.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Cheers.

Ah, due the age of your laptop it might not have any temperature sensors, I had a MSI motherboard few years back which showed no temperature readings or fan speeds.

Just done a google search and your 2 processes are for Norton, if you want remove Norton and run AVG or Avast anti-virus.

Thanks a lot.

Yes, it must be the age of the mobo because it turns out my 1 year old Samsung HDD is running around 33-37 deg. :)

However I don't know why I get the flickering screen even after I terminate the processes, simply running Windows Media Player and anything else at the same time. It used to do it fine.

Thanks for the help.

Please anybody got any ideas on the screen flicker?

I hooked it up to a 37" TV a few times which it could barely handle lol. Could this have caused it do you think. I think it's an Intel VIA from ages ago.
