Hopefully someone can help me out here. When windows has loaded and connects to the internet, my disk usage goes straight up to 100% and stays there for 5 to 6 minutes. This is not a virus. I have read on microsoft and some forums saying this is windows update and to disable it, but this does not cure my problem. I know that it is svchost running. Also forums report that cpu usage goes to 100%, but my cpu usage is not affected only hard drive. I am using vista home premium 64 bit.
This did not happen when I first installed vista, it happened about 3 months after. I have done a clean install and it happens straight away. any help would be great.

Control Panel -> Windows Defender -> Tools -> Options
Disable the schedule for scans.
Worked for me.

No, the cpu usage stays normal, very low, it is disk activity that goes to 100%, the hard drive light comes on permanently for the 5-6 mins, and using resource monitor in task manager, hard drive activity is 100%, which is where it tells me svchost is running. Also windows defender scheduled scanning is disabled.

It could be system restore.

My HD still goes crazy occasionally. Resource monitor shows lots of disk writes to 'system volume information' directory and system restore shows a scheduled checkpoint which coincides with the disk activity.

It's superfetch retrieving your most commonly used files and caching it into RAM. If you open task manager when the hard drive access starts, then go to the performance tab, you will see the free value decrease and the cached value increase. When the free RAM value reaches close to zero, it'll stop. You can also view what files it is caching by clicking the resource monitor button in the same window, then expanding the disk menu in the list. Sort the view by 'read (b/min)', and you'll be able to see exactly what it's doing.
