ok i have a:

  • p4 3.06GHz prescott
  • 2.25GB DDR1
  • p915 chipset mobo
  • 7800GT pci-e
  • tagan u15 430W

now i have £100 to spend on an upgrade.

i already have a E2140, 2x1GB corsair XMS2 C4 pc6400, but no mobo (the p915 wont run it from what i have read)

so do i spend £100 on a p5k-e wifi and a freezer 7 pro for my new rig

or on a 9600GT for my old.

what would give me a more everyday boost, along with gaming.

currently i have a 5:4 17" 1280x1024 monitor, and i can run COD4 maxXxed out at full AF and 4xAA (max i can select) avging 30FPS.

I love my 7800gt, spend the cash on a P35 board the freezer pro and maybe 2 more gig of ramif you feel like pushing the boat out that little more. This will be better than a P4 with a 9600gt anyday :)

yup get a mobo and cooler, get gfx later on
or do it the other way and you'll be ordering mobo for your e2140 in no time after you install new gfx ;)
that happend to my p4 sytem after putting in 8800gt (week later i ordered mobo and cpu) :D

Im built my E6700 rig 18 months ago, and to keep within budget I opted for a 7900GTX graphics. While I know the 7900GTX is quite a bit faster than the 7800GT, you should still find at the resolutions your talking about, switching to the E2140 should give you the "best" boost, and you can always slap in a better graphics card later.

yeah, well it was my cheap setup coming through, but with two £40 DOA mobos :( i have £80 for new mobo, and i found £20 lying around.

the 7800GT artifacts in the first few seconds of a game, just white/grey blotches everywhere, and then nothing after that. i even put the fan speed to 100% (mad loud) and a 120mm fan on it, and reseated the G70 core and the ram with AS5, but the artifacting still occurs, but as its only for a few seconds i dont mind much. and seeing as i got it for £15, id say its a bargin :)

ok, im gonna splash out on the mobo when i get my money back (it says refunded, but not appeared on my bank yet) from OcUK for the DOA P35C-DS3R

then i would have spent £150 to get a p5k-e e2140 corsair DDR2 2GB 7800GT and a ACF7P

i think thats pretty good, no?

Yeah sounds like a good plan :D Shame about the Graphics tho, but if you can live with it, its all good then!

I liked how we were on the same wee mission... always seen you on the threads i looked at :P

My Cheap C2D rig adventure is coming to an end soon too... managed to land a e2180 for £36 yesterday... :D Well chuffed

Yeah... defo! Can get wee proper bargains, dont need much money... helps tho! :P

e2140 for £34 is still damn good! Wow, 3.45... NICE :D Id be happy with 3.2 from the 2180... will wait and see! Mines i snuck in a wee offer last min, got it for 32 and 4 postage :)

My Cheapo mission consists of...

Antec P182 = £45
Asus P5N- E SLi = 35
e2180 = £36
Northbride cooler = £5
OCZ DDR2 7200 Platinum = £22.50
Akasa 460W PaxPower = £25

The bottom 2 items i just secured tonight :) Only things i need are a SATA DVD-RW drive and a CPU cooler, AC Freezer 7 Pro i hope!

Does seem a wee bit... but got basically an entire 939 system to get rid of, cpu, cooler, mobo, case, dvd rw, ram... so should get quite a bit back!

Glad ya got that money back, nice feeling spending it on something that you enjoy and use lots :)

very very very nice system.

how did you get the p182 for 45. thats a superb price for such a good case.

i hope your p5n-e is stable and works :)

mine didnt :(

On here... Someone selling up, i live local too, so that one didnt have any postage :) Was the first part i got actually, it inspired the rest lol!

Case is awesome, never had a 'good' case, always been 20-30 quid local shops ones!

Aww i hope it is too...! Sucks yours didnt... will be nice to have a nice new motherboard tho! :D

Not to mention my 'best of both worlds' suggestion of a P35 for your e2*** and a 9600gt! :( :D

Should still do ok with that 7 series though...

In fact i've just built a full e1200 system using 2gb of ram, 7800gt, 80gb HDD, 450watt PSU, freezer 7 pro and coolermaster case for £160 so your pricings bang on.
