Ello.

Just thought id pop in as im wondering about somit.

I know next to nothing about how cars work but i would like to drive one. I have roughly £1000 coming soon and wondering if anyone reckons i could learn to drive and get a very cheap car just for shopping and visiting local family for around £1000 or would it cost a lot more?

Worried about my knowlage of cars too as most ppl know a lot about cars and i just know pretty much squat so if anything breaks im screwed and id probs not know if a fault was developing.

Car wise, somit small i reckon and cheap to run and insure etc and actual cost would be £100-200 or less. Maybe a 50 quid metro :p

Thoughts?

Didnt say run it for a year with £1000. Just learn, and get a car and be driving with £1000. I would have to pay fuel and tax/ins when i can etc tho im not sure about how id last with tax and insurance etc i mean i duno prices i mean how much would a short duration cost to get it on the road running for say first 3 months or something?

Im sure with my brothers help i could get a car under £200 or £150. I want the basic of basics car just somit id use for shopping and visiting family locally. Nothing flashy no gimicks can look real boring for all i care. Driving lessons i think can be had for £15 ph.

Thanks for the replies so far i know its a long shot but well thats why im here askin in hopes someone has had a similar budget and managed it or find ways to cut the cost down to my budget. Still just a passing idea.

Ah well, worth a shot to think about its just i doubt id have this kinda money for a very long time. Thought if any time was the right time, this would be it. :(

I probably could get brother to make sure its working now and then and no issues but the issue is if a fault develops on the road i was worried about.

Im 28 dogbreath.

To be fair though I dont anyone beleives a word you say :p I cant imagine it being possible unless its a special offer to hook you in before you get charged regular price.

I doubt you can even break even on the cost of running a car, etc etc at £16 ph for lessons.

Now i have no idea who these are and yes their site SUCKS!!! but meh they might be ok doing teaching than they are at webdesign lol.

Cheap enough 10 lessons for 135 quid. Or 10ph if u do book 30 lessons. Now not saying id use em but theres an example of the usual average driving instructors round Sunderland.

If you're 28 and £1000 is a windfall then what do you do for work?
If £1000 is a lot of money and rare to have then tbh I doubt you can afford to drive. You're better off getting a little scooter thats very cheap to run. This allows you to visit family etc like you need but wont have the huge costs of running a car...

Dont work. But should be able to have 30 quid a fortnight spare maybe 40 which would be used to run the car and pay for tax and ins every 3-6 months i think u can do. Obviously i will be using it sparingly like weekends probably so car wouldnt be used much so should keep fuel cost down.

Scooter would be useless for a fortnightly shop trip im accustomed too. Plus i dont like scooters or motorbikes, wouldn't trust myself on one.

Ok this might be a controversial suggestion but if you get a job, you'll... be able to afford to run a car. If you don't have a job, then luxury items like cars are something you probably wont be able to afford to have.

Well i cant work atm and havent for years. Something i cant and wont go into on a public forum.

Yeah kinda got that and kinda said ok nvm in not so many words earlier in the topic.

Thanks for the replies.

Just figured i might have been able to learn to drive and get a cheap car to run on weekends with not much use might have been possible ah well tho. Guess ill have to continue to wait.

If he wants to get mobile it looks like that or nothing.

Also, how is he getting his fortnightly shop trip done currently? Surely he can just carry on doing it however he's doing?

A car is used in fortnightly trips for shopping but i wont go into it as it is irrelevent to the topic at hand which is a topic about ability to learn and get a car on the road for a start for a grand, minus insurance and things as id probs pay that as and when it is required i.e not a years calculation worth out of the grand.
