100hz lcd's in "pc mode" - when ?

Just curious..plenty of so called "100hz" screens have come out lately like the toshiba z series / le40f86bd but generally the 100hz isn't working with a lot of tv style content (no surprises there then!). However what it would be very useful for imo, is pc type games! yet in "pc mode" they don't seem to do more than 60hz which is a real shame.

Anyone know when this may chance or maybe theres a screen i've overlooked?
 
you've missed the point of 100hz processing

100hz processing is not in any way usefull for PC use. 100hz processing is effectively a computer technique used for tidying up crappy SD broadcasts by interpolating frames to reduce stutter

100hz processing should always be turned off when viewing Bluray / HD-DVD as it ruins thr 24p film effect, and can in fact make it look worse than sets that try and perform 3:2 pulldown and display at 60p

because PC content is usually very good, the 100hz processing isnt needed

think of 100hz processing as another addition to the range of acronys already available for TVs like DniE, Bravia Engine, Xycc colour etc..

its not the black and white difference that 100hz was on CRTs monitors.
 
100Hz on LCD is a marketing tool. With a decent panel in the first place you can't tell a blind bit of difference,. I quite happily saved £150 on my Panasonic by getting the non-100Hz version.

No. If there's still 25/30fps then it's just doubling up frames with guesswork.
100Hz is useless on a PC unless your graphics card is doing over 60fps...

100Hz was useful on CRT displays as the interlaced signal flickered. This is no longer a problem on LCDs as they display a constant image.

What's the issue with vsync?

LCDs process the image as complete frames rather than scanning line by line as CRTs do. Surely vsync is a therefore a good idea.
 
I think everyone is getting confused between the 'real' 100Hz which would mean higher framerates without tearing in games and this mystical 100Hz HDTV phenomenon.

Gaming/pc wise;
100 'real' Hz = good
100 'HDTV' Hz = not good

Ok, i'm getting the point that on lcd's until its genuine 100hz rather than the current technique then it won't be as "dramatic" of a difference but even from the reviews i've read regarding 100hz, they have said that it does smoothen out the experience but somehow makes it feel somehow unrealistic. However, in games on the pc this would surely be a great improvement ?

Can't say I've noticed it. I use 19" Sony CRT with my PC and can't say I've ever noticed any difference at 75Hz+ other than lack of flicker. It will do 100Hz+ upto 1280x1024.
 
Obviously it depends on the person too, competitive gamers in first person shooters will be far more likely to notice and feel a great difference.

ask yourself this. Why do no PC monitors feature 100hz processing ? not even the 24inch super dooper multi media ones ?

because 100hz processing is only of use for tidying up poor quality sources that are highly compressed and probably look awfull.

the video output from a PC isnt a poor quality source.

and why do games need any improvements in smoothness made ? if you're vsynced at 60hz / 60 fps the source is perfectly smooth anyway. The days of smearly LCDs have long gone except for the cheapo korean models.

that depends on your eyesight. Somebody on motors the other day was asking why LED brake lights flicker really fast. Everbody replied they dont, untill somebody came on and explained that LED lights use pulse wave modulation. They turn on and off really fast to avoid heating up the LEDs and to prolong their lifespan.

This pulsing was completely invisible to most people except him. And its people with this sort of eyesight that will see a visible difference in 100hz CRTs. I remember at work, i could quite happily use a monitor at 60hz, and some people said doesnt it hurt your eyes, and it looked fine to me.

i dont think you'll ever see an LCD that refreshs its pixels at 100hz. The only reason that CRTs look so bad at 60hz is because the effect is so visible. When theres no lines being drawn down the screen, the refreshing effect isnt visible.

They could produce it, to enable to gamers to sync at 100fps instead of 60fps, but thats the only use for it, and as such doesnt justify the cost involved to the manufacturers, so i doubt it will be done in the LCD technologies life time. Theres far too much money being spent on new technologies than working out how to get LCDs to refresh at 100hz rather than 60hz.

This is where the disagreement lies :)

unfortunately the manufacturers agree with me

which is why nobody makes an LCD panel that refresh at more than 60 times a second. Because with LCDs the effects visible at 60hz on CRTs, arent visible to all but those with the most sensitive of eyesights

and because there are so few people who can actually tell the difference, the dont bother making one.
 
100hz is much better

I just bought a 100hz samsung... and it looks so much smoother than my old one

same deal with gamers still using CRT's - 100hz is a LOT smoother than 60/75
 
only 100hz TV that samsung produce is the F86 that im aware of.

and nearly all of the reviews ive read conclude the same as i do, it smoothes it out at the expense of it looking silly, with an allmost handycam esque quality about the movement
 
yea it looks silly in movies etc because it somehow doesn't make the animation look real. I suspect that in games it'd look ultra smooth!

Does anyone know if 100hz on these current lcd's work with games console games?
