Does anyone know if there is a service or company that allows u to use a 50/100mbit link for uploading data e.g cad models, hi-res photos as this would save time and money (either uploading at 40kb/s on an adsl line or posting a dvdr of the data)... i read a it about colocation, and some places allowing u to place a box in a rack or something and they give u 24/7 access. so wouldnt it be possible for me to burn the data onto a disc, go to the colocation, insert the disc and upload to whomever needs it?

is this possible or am i better off finding an internet cafe with a fast upload

thoughts plz

There are many quite a few providers that sell dedicated leased lines, fiber, long reach ethernet services and SDH but do you understand the cost that is involved with these connections?

Were talking many thousands of pounds per month.

Co-Location services are designed for high availability and improved access times across different geographic areas, yes you can have your own server hosted in a managed data centre and have it co-located for such purposes, these centres normally peer with tier 1 and 2 ISP's for very good connectivity.

If your looking for a good upload at a reasonable price i would consider SDSL but your still looking at paying upwards of £500pm depending on the service you require.

£500pm? A 2Mbps SDSL service can be had for £200 or £300 if you want a managed router. That's going to give a big boost over ADSL upload speeds (even if you can't max the line).

If youre close to your exchange then BE can give you SDSL upload speeds and much much faster downloads :)

Otherwise its expensive leased lines or having your data hosted somewhere else but afaik, working remotely on CAD drawings and big pictures isnt really a good idea :P So then youre left downloading the file, working on it and uploading it again once the changes are made >:\

with Co Location hosting you could have a server on a phat pipe and just put in DVDs, if you need the phat pipe going to your house a Leased line is the only thing able to offer this speed. And as said they are very expensive. I assume though that this is a business, time is money, but it is just a question of how much. Only you know.

first option sounds more economical, but i mean in a the hosting place, if the box is in a rack, how will i be able to upload it without input devices, or can u justwheel a monitor/mouse/keyboard over?

How often will you be uploading? I could imagine some providers getting a bit annoyed if you're turning up every day wanting physical access to a box.

question is

where do you live

these co-location things tend to be very close to telehouse in london. Its not a question of finding one in every city.

Remember that the £200 - £500 solution will still be on a contended connection and probably still at a contention ratio of 50:1
So during peak periods you probably won't see the maximum bandwidth you'd like.

The only way to get true 2mb+ connections is via leased lines which are an awful lot more.
We currently have an 8mb/8mb leased line and the 1:1 contention means we have that bandwidth available to us all the time.
We actually paid to have a 45mb pipe installed and we're currently tiered to 8mb.
We will be moving to a 16mb/16mb connection later this year as once you get past the 8mb speed adding extra mb doesn't cost that much extra per month.

Speak to some co-loc places and see if they can provide you with that service... as previously stated... they are mainly around London

You wouldn't necessarily need co-lo, you could rent a low end dedicated server for pretty much the same price with no initial outlay (and of course you don't need to worry about the hardware then). If it's just going to be serving files you really don't need a particularly beefy machine.

Whilst sending DVDs in the post and having the hosting company put it in the machine for you may work, if you need to do this more than once every couple of weeks you're going to become their most annoying customer. :o

You're not going to get 24/7 unescorted access for co-locating a 1U box...

Remarkably I think we would give a customer 24/7 access if they requested it, even for a 1u colo and bandwidth. Then again, we're not what you call cheap...

Unescorted?

For 1U?

They could touch anything. :o

They have access to one rack only, our own equipment is in a seperate suite (and thats what I care about) , the contract clearly states they are liable for any all costs caused by anything they touch.
