105 5800 Brake Adjustment

Morning all,

Just back from a ride in the sun and bike wash and I noticed my rear brake had been rubbing on the tire slightly.

Is there anyway to adjust the drop at all? I got a 2nd hand set off ebay, standard clearance I think but the pads are right at the bottom of the slot and it's not quite enough

Suggestions would be great!

If you're at the bottom of the slot then that's as far as you can go.

You might need a 57mm drop caliper, standard is 49mm

That would probably do it. Not sure sure 105 come in 57mm.

Very unusual. WHat bike is it?

Sure your rear wheel is pushed fully up?

shimano R650 is the ultegra-level 57mm caliper, R451 is a tiagra level. they're the same casting, the ultegra just gets better hardware and pads

I wouldn't worry, once you get to 57mm drop on the rear it won't matter who made it as it won't have any stopping power anyway

yeah the difference between the Campag Mirage brakes to the Shimano R650 is considerable.

what about if I just filed the slot out 2/3mm.......

The bike is a GT GTS Expert, it came with standard tekro dual pivot, slightly longer i guess

Takes mudgaurds so I guess that's why frame needs 57mm?

mudguards are exactly why it requires a longer caliper.

you might get away with filing 1mm, but i'd be sketchy about going any further

yeah generally if the bike is designed to have mudguards, then the brakes would be deep drop. The two bikes I have that can fit guards, have DD brakes.

yeah, never really thought about it. I'll have a look at the brake, see how much meat there is.
