Hi all,

So I thought it was time to finally upgrade my 560ti and get back into the world of PC gaming, but so far its a rocky start.. I bought an EVGA 1070 second hand off the big online marketplace and got it yesterday, I uninstalled all the old drivers and inserted it. Now this is where the problem starts, I press the power button but nothing happens, dead. I take out the power from the 1070 and then it starts but nothing appears on screen. I thought it may be a PSU issue so I got a new 650w EVGA 650G2 delivered today, but still the problem hasn't gone away. So it isn't the PSU from what I gather. Now, when I insert the old card it boots up as normal so from that I don't think it's the motherboard either? Or could it be? It's getting on a bit now as it's an Asus M5A99FX with 8GB Ram installed and an Asus soundcard. I've tried reinserting all the power cables but nada.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as it's driving me up the wall!

Everything you've described points to the graphics cards being faulty, especially given your machine won't power on when it's plugged in. What CPU do you have? If it doesn't have built in graphics then you'll likely get a a blank screen when you remove the GPU as there are no graphics to show the display on the monitor...

Damn, that's what I was thinking. It is under warranty still so I'll ask about it. The motherboard doesn't have onboard graphics as far as I'm aware and the CPU is an FX 8350.

Thanks for your replies!

I googled Asus M5A99FX noticed many reports issues with GTX 1070 cards cant booted after installed card due to motherboard used old PCI Express 2.0.

I suggest you to try to install GTX 1070 card in your friends or neighbour PC to see if card is working properly.

If it working then you definitely need to upgrade to new new CPU, RAM and motherboard.

Oh right, I'll have a further look into that, thanks for finding that out. I'll check it at the computer shop (just moved and no friends with PCs here..). May be the excuse I need to upgrade :p

I was just about to post a similar thing, I’ve got an old pc in my living room and it won’t boot with either of my 1070’s in it, the 10 series cards don’t like old kit which frankly they are not suitable for anyway, your cpu will also bottleneck a 1070 ,not massively tbh but it wouldn’t be the best match to that card imo.

Just an update on this for anyone in the same situation, turns out it was the 1070. Thankfully EVGA are very good with their warranties so it's going back for replacement.
