1080 vs 1080ti

The 4790K is a fine CPU, but it will hold even a 1070 back a little. Comparing a 4790K to a 8700K, most of the time there was little real-world difference, but I found that in very stressful situations the 4790K suffered larger drops in FPS than the 8700K. Not in all games and not in all situations, but there was a noticeable difference. Rather it affected lowest FPS than highest FPS. This would be even more pronounced with a 1080. It's not to say that 4790K owners should run out and replace their CPU, but in my opinion anything above a 1070 does start to make you think of CPU upgrade next!!

Ah okay, I see what you mean. I guess my CPU does indeed bottleneck my GPU in a sense then due to the dips in min FPS, but my eyes cant tell the difference between 100 and 144fps thankfully. 60fps however feels like a slide show now that I've been spoiled by fast refresh rates!

I think the term is often misused. In most cases there is something to be gained with the latest components but it doesn't really imply that there was some bottleneck in your old system. For example, some time ago there was a bottle neck in motherboards and this was the data bus between the CPU and GPU. Once you hit the limit of the bus, a new CPU or GPU made little difference because they simply could not communicate any faster. But these days, people tend to use the term when your CPU/RAM/Mobo is disproportionately powerful or weak compared to your GPU. It means that the GPU requires more or less data than your CPU can supply. Not really a bottleneck, more an imbalance. All systems can be improved with the latest hardware, but often people don't want to spend loads of money if it turns out their system was pretty well balanced already, which I why, I suppose, time is spend considering "bottlenecks".

Yes. I was playing games that frequently fell below 60fps and in that circumstance the 8700K made a very big difference. But if you're low is 100fps then I don't see any point in replacing the CPU right now.
 
That makes more sense Pocah, thanks for taking the time to explain it to me! :)

I didn't bother going through with a planned upgrade from my Xeon x5650 (4.4ghz) to a 2700x DDR4 system as it was £600+ and from the sounds of things, the only improvement might be minimum FPS markers... but if the lowest I'm getting is 100fps in one of the games I play, then I think I've made the right choice for no2

Sorry to hi-jack the thread but can you explain why Asus warranty is a joke? New to PC gaming and really like the look of the Strix cards.

well firstly, asus warranty is a joke. the fact that op bought it off ebay means that asus won't honour their "warranty" anway.
gigabyte cards are based off their serial number, they do occasionally ask to see the original proof of purchase though. also, gigabyte has a uk rma depot.

asus only deals with retailers, so if you're after the 12 month "return to retailer" period, you'll be fobbed off by the retailer, and by asus who'll keep telling you to go via the retailer.
if you do want to get an asus card though, i'd advise only buying from ocuk as they have a different agreement with asus, compared to other etailers.
