1080p LCD TV as monitor?

eh? If your display is 1920x1080, desktop resolution is 1920x1080, with ffdshow scaling to 1920x1080, and a cpu capable of blu-ray/hd-dvd, and can playback 1080p movies in WMP or Power DVD, then what you're seeing is HD.

50cm is far to close to a 37" screen.

I find it fine, I'm more than used to it. Obviously I sit back for TV shows and movies, just for gaming and general usage I'm up close.
IMHO, 40" is maybe a bit too big for continuous daily use. 32" seem reasonable to me. Are you going to use it as an HD TV as well though? 1080p on a 32" is arguably wasted.
1080P isn't wasted on a 32" because when being used on a PC 1360x768 stretched to a 32" will look pretty eerie.

you might find it fine, but its too close for your eyes. honestly i sit further than that away from my 24". for a 37" screen, you should be sitting about 3.5 feet away at least.

A friend and I were both in agreement that our next screens for our pcs would be in the form of LCD tv's that do 1080p, can then really enjoy HD video and you get a good view of things when gaming, along with being able to hook up your 360 or in my case Wii :)

you can watch blurays and hd-dvd's using vga, dvi or hdmi:)
You can't if the video card isn't HDCP compliant (I think). Maybe that's what he means.

What I~ meant was form an HD movie point of view. If you are going to watch HDS films on the TV you are going to sit further back than 50 cm away (hopefully). What I was saying was that at 5+ feet 1080p on a 32" will not look any better than 720p. Certainly it will look good for a PC.

It is far far to close, you're really screwing your eyes up.

I have a sharp aquos 37" 1080p LCD TV which am planning to use with new PC build. The LCD does 1920x1080 with a dvi to hdmi cable, and you can turn off ovescan. I assume the 8800ultra will have 1080p as a selectable res. However what happens when I play games like Crysis. At 1080p my rig will struggle. So does Crysis and other games in general support 720p. The sharp scales 720p images really well on my PS3 (if I deselect 1080p to prevent the PS3 from scaling the image). I would hope PC games at 720p are equally impressive. Another question I have is about in between resolutions. Say games that I want to run at 1650 for example. Can lcd tv's over hdmi handle this res or generally only do 720p or 1080p ? By the way the vga output on the sharp only supports 1280x1024 max. Thanks.

yeah 720p should be selectable, no problem with that. im not sure but generally it is only 'hd' resolutions that panels accept over hdmi. 480p, 720p and 1080i/p are available on my sony 40w2000 for example, but nothing in between. while, if i plumb it through my onkyo av amp, i then have a number of resolutions to choose from, some obscure ones like 1176x664 and 1782x992 for example.

Currently I'm using 2 x 19" monitors...

What size screen would give be the equivalent size?

My current screens are around 375mm wide, so which screen size would be closest to 750mm wide? 37"?

a 37" is about 32" wide i think, so its just over.

**edit often use 37" as a screen for games & movies at my parents house, have to sit a few feet away from it cos its just not pleasant being that close. Its a 720p and has a few niggles when connected with VGA, aint tried the new 42" 1080p set yet cos its in their tv room;(

Kk, I'll keep an eye out for a 37" or 40"... It would be nice to have something I could watch films on as well as normal computery stuff. :)
