hi guys

From what I can remember is that when I had my 980ti and 1080 the idle temps were always in their 30s

just browsing the internet nothing else no overclocking no fans spinning

Now my idle temps for my current gpu is 55c even with the fans spinning ever so lightly

is that normal, check your gpu plz and tell me what your idel temps are.

cheers

I was using a November driver (can't remember exactly revision) until today that wouldn't downclock my 980ti fully, it would idle at 1050mhz (rather then 135) thus driving idle temps up.

Fixed with a clean install of the latest drivers.

Maybe worth checking your idle clockspeeds.

im using 390.65 so its quite a new driver, there is a newer one out im gonna download that and see wot happens

but ive also checked the clock settings right now and its 1392MHz, is that ok?

@hobib_ali you are forgetting a very important detail and that is what brand and version of card you have. Some have fans off when not gaming and under a certain temp as a feature. My previous rx 580 would do that causing it to idle at around 55ish when nothing was going on.

Now for stuck 3d clocks its usually because some program is keeping the gpu in 3d clock mode. Ive seen the curse chat app doing it and a few others. The easiest way to test for this is to disable everything under startup and reboot (if you are using win10 you can do this through the taskmanager(rightclick taskbar ->Taskmanager. Or ctrl+alt+del) or in previous windows versions through msconfig). Then check the clocks again using something like gpu-z(downloaded and ready before you even reboot the first time) to see if the gpu idles properly(dont open anything else). Report back here with your findings.

You should be around mid 20’s - mid 30’s ideally.

Sounds like a repaste job. I did my 1080 FTW the other night, high 30’s idle and now it’s down to 23-24c, load temps -25c compared to before.

Something is preventing the card dropping to idle clock speeds, 1392mhz idle is too high, it should be closer to ~130mhz. As mentioned above see what process may be causing it. Remember if you have a 1440p 144hz+ display you'll want to change the desktop to 120hz to ensure the card idles down correctly.

Im running 144hz on my 1440p monitor on the desktop and my card idles to 139mhz core and 405mhz mem without issue. So that old bug should be gone now(had it on my 1070)

1080 - Idles at 2oC over room temperature (currently showing 24oC, so guessing other half has the heating on at 21-22oC)
Full load for a few hours it peaks and stabilises at around 40oC

Watercooled with a lot of radiator OFC

As mentioned your card should definitely not be idling at 1392Mhz! No wonder your idle temp is high.

My 1080Ti FE idles at 139Mhz on the core, 101Mhz on the mem. Low power states might vary marginally depending on the brand/ board but all should be similarly low clock speeds at idle.
My idle temp is usually around 23 - 25 degrees if room is 'average' temp for UK.

As mentioned make sure Power management mode in global section "manage 3d settings" is set to "optimal".

There used to be a bug ages ago when idle clocks could be high if you had 2 or more monitors attached to your GPU, or your monitor Hz was 120+ on the desktop, but that's a thing of the past now far as I know.

Mine do not ramp down though im running SLI 1080TI`s both idle @26/27c respectively.
and load around 45/51c both under stress @2000mhz aswell as running 2x monitors and a 4k oled tv. ;)

Though currently only one is running high 1506mhz and other is 139mhz lol

The 1080ti Runs hot so 50c on idol is very normal! as others have said go and change the curve in afterburner - I have my MSI 1080ti max loading hitting 60c MAX ! you can get it to stay at this by changing the fan curve settings.

I have a Founders Edition 1080ti, and the last two drivers sets have seen my idle temp jump up by about 5 degrees to 40.

I have set the fan curve manually, and at 3440 x 1440 and at 120hz AAA games push me to low 80s and sometimes mid 80 degrees before the thermal throttle kicks in (I have it set at 84 degrees in afterburner).

I noticed 'Prey' doing this last night.

I am wondering if a thermal re paste would help now.....I have some arctic cooler kicking around somewhere.
