1080ti or wait

Hello

Apologies if this is a much discussed point. And I know that there is lots of discussion about Volta and now Ampere, but I'm not really savvy enough to separate the sound conjecture from the bad.

I have a pretty good MSI 980ti at the moment, but I'd like to push things a little further especially on the Rift. So I'm looking at the 1080ti - specifically the Aorus (non-extreme).
Is it worth making this upgrade now, or is the smart money on waiting a bit longer for nVidia's next lot?

Thanks

Thanks Robzere31

I was going to mention this axiom, and it is of course true.
But although there's no 'perfect' time to buy new tech, there are different levels of imperfect!
I've been stung in the past. So I just want to get a few well educated opinions!

I'm waiting for the new gen GPU's before upgrading, I really dont think much of the 10xx series considering the price. Also for the games I play lately, my old GPU is just fine. Sadly though, due to the lack of competition I think Nvidia will take their time coming out with new GPU's. So if you really need an upgrade, then go for it. If you can wait 6+ months then wait and get something better :)

I'd personally wait, mainly because the new cards aren't too far away and plus Pascal is only a tweaked version of the Maxwell card that you already have! Wait if you can.

Thanks for the replies folks!

JediFragger - when you say 'Aren't too far away', what kind of ballpark are you thinking: a month or two, or half a year?

Also, another factor in my decision is of course price. Over the generations have any trends become apparent as a line is reaching the end of its life?
The Aorus 1080ti I mentioned is now popping up for around £710.
Are 1080ti's likely to gradually drop further in price as we approach the launch of whatever's next, or is that just not how it works?

Thanks.
What about my question as to whether prices for 1080tis are likely to reduce as the release of NVidias next gen edges closer?
What patterns have you savvy folk noticed in the past leading up to generational transition?

There won't be a price reduction, though there might be some special offers now and then. The new GPUs will be out before the prices drop.

I usually skip a generation with graphics cards. The 980Ti performs roughly on par with a 1070 today so it depends what you find acceptable.

Personally I'd hold off until the next round of cards. With the top tier cards you're paying a lot of money out so I'd want to wring out every last drop until it just can't keep up anymore.

If you just like to change every year then you're better off in the mid range where your initial outlay is not so high and the depreciation not so significant.

In terms of hardware experience, I'm pretty much the opposite of the OP.

I started with a Vive with an R9 290. Then jumped up to a 1080ti and appreciated the big difference in performance.

But would a 980ti to a 1080ti be as much of a leap - I doubt it.

My driver for upgrades will be VR technology. I'm waiting for the next gen of VR which will dictate how Ispend my money.

My advice is stick with the 980ti, and spend when the next gen of VR comes out. I was happy with my 290...

I did this upgrade, a 980ti @1550mhz to a 1080ti @2.1ghz
I personally feel it was a very good upgrade.

Not only for the outright speed increase, but for the additional 5gb of gpu memory which more games are demanding now.

I'm in the fortunate position to have enough disposable income to indulge my hobby & I appreciate not everyone is in that position so yes the 980TI is still a very capable card.

Exactly this. If you want the extra grunt now then go for it and enjoy.

Whatever NVidia push out the door with the next gen of cards will only have marginally better performance than the existing 1080 Ti.

The reason for this is NVidia tend to launch their new mid range cards first which are only a little bit faster than the previous gen high end cards.

We are probably a long way off getting a big upgrade from the 1080 Ti in the shape of Volta/Ampere high end.

As with some comments above, if you wait for the next model, then once that is launched, everyone will say to wait for the next one.....and you never end up buying anything.
I am looking to upgrade from my 1070 to the 1080ti, just waiting for next weekend (Black Friday) and hope a good deal will come up.
If you have the ££, go for it. Then in 6-8-12months when the next gen is released, you can recover some of your cost by selling the current card and investing in the next gen.

Ofcourse you would say this, you just went and spent 1200 bucks on a 1080 with Star Wars logo on it :P I disagree though, I have been tracking Nvidia a lot and I think the next gen Nvidia GPU's will be far better. We will find out in the next 3-6 months I guess.

I went from a Gigabyte 980Ti G1 Gaming to the EVGA 1080Ti FTW3 with Destiny 2 for £738, very happy with the upgrade even though I just game at 1440p/60Hz. See what deals black friday brings, get one and enjoy it.

Even if they have the potential to be, Nvidia don't give anything away for free. All their cards are very carefully cut down and segmented into the performance level they want to achieve. There's really no reason for them to give us a massive leap in performance, since AMD are still way off the pace. I expect it to be the same as the past couple of generations, with the 1170 being somewhere around the 1080 Ti's performance whilst using a lot less power, with the 1180 becoming the new king. Then the Titan and Ti will come along later and make both look like mid-range cards.
