1080Ti upgrade

If your frame rate doesn't drop, is G-Sync actually necessary? This tends to be how I configure my games anyway (for 60fps, accept in some games with game engine problems / texture streaming etc. Kingdom Come: Deliverance for example).

Maybe G-sync is useful to help with the odd frame drop, but I tend to only focus on the the lowest 1% of frames.

In general though, isn't it better to set games not to drop below 60 if possible? Full screen mode (exclusive) seems to help quite a lot with frame smoothness in some games too.

Are you benching at 1080p here?

Yes it's the default Valley 1.0 benchmark. Extreme HD profile.

The benchmark is easy install and allows a quick relative test so I can get a feel for how new hardware is running.

I quickly realised that my 3080 wasn't showing the expected improvement so could start to find the culprit which turned out to be the CPU limit.

Superposition benchmark - 4K Optimised
3080/12700K
14360
Avg fps: 107.41

I will monitor FE Part Alert and try to bag one.....if not will have to wait....can't see the point in wasting way over the odds, whilst the 1080Ti is still doing a reasonable job.

thanks for the reply :)

and thanks for the superposition benchmark too, I get avg fps 106.67, 14261, 3080/3700X

just goes to confirm that at the higher resolutions the cpu makes nearly no difference.

/edit i suppose min framerates and 1% lows might be better with the 12700K?

I believe so. At 4k you're right there's diminishing returns but I was using Icarus as a litmus and my 3070 Ti was running hot and loud. The Inno3D cooler design has smaller fans to accommodate useless plastic tat and LEDs but they're the ones I could get. After the 3080 + 12700K I was back to a faster less stressed system. I play at 3440 x 1440 res and the gain was still noticeable.

Yup, the 3080 can flex it’s muscles at 4K :) the 12700K is a great partner to it too.

do you have MSFS2020? I’d be interested to know what your experience is with that, with the fast cpu? That’s about the only game I spend a lot of time with which is suspect might be significantly held back by my 3700X, especially as I game at 1440p
