As the title says really, I'm looking to upgrade to a 1080ti, and it is more than likely going to be a 3 slot card. With this is mind, am I going to struggle to fit the 1080 in? If it's possible to tell from the picture I've linked?

Build is:

Gigabyte Z68MA-D2H-B3
I5 2500K OC to 4.2ghz
GTX 970
16GB DDR3 Vengeance
XFX psu

Evga 1080ti with icx coolers are 2 slot cards. Don't know about the rest. I've got one and it's silent under load but I don't know how it compares to other brands
Plus I'd recommend evga on the basis of their warranty.

They're also the best looking 1080ti's IMO, Personally I prefer the two fan Superclocked over the 3 fan FTW version

In all honesty if your still on 1080p, I'd say it's about time you upgrade your entire system before going much further.

1080Ti and 1080p don't mix very well without bottlenecks. Especially with a 7 year old i5 system.

Thanks for all the replies.

Since posting, and as suggested I have found out that the Evga FTW is a dual slot with the same 3.5cm measurement as my current 970 so theoretically it should fit, although I'm slightly worried that it may interfere with my RAM slot clips above - as the 1080ti has a backplate.

The card below my GPU is a wireless card and to be honest I never use wireless, I have a hardware connection all the time.

The card below that is my soundcard.

I am going 1440p 144hz, is the i5 2500k still sufficient then? Or is this a good excuse for a full 're build :p

Thanks.

Looks like he going lose some them sata sockets with a 3 slot card

Motherboard manufacturers need to be slapped with their designs. Common one was putting the battery hidden behind the graphics card. Who is daft enough to design a motherboard with sata connectors facing up? This was 2003 territory. nForce 1/2 days. Most I see facing the front of the case. That and most were bad at placing the CPU power plug.

Definitely a reason to upgrade even at 1440p.

An 8600k, 8700k will be a huge improvement over the 2500k.

Or a similar spec ryzen build if that's your preference.

it should not. the spacing are all standardised (up to a certain point), besides, nowadays most high end gpus have backplates ;p

Right, I think i'm convinced to upgrade my build, it has served me well since 2011 (apart from the GPU and PSU).

So now I have a decision to make; do I go Coffee Lake or Ryzen? I've always been Intel and never AMD, but the Ryzen is priced very competitively and I think the i7 8700k is out of my budget for what I want to pay. It looks like either i5 8600k or the Ryzen price equivalent (maybe the Ryzen 7 1700?). Opinions welcome on this, as it will be the first time in ages i've upgraded these component and so am out of the loop a little, with what is the best bang for buck for gaming, and is future proof like the 2500k was.

Thanks.

My 1080ti means I can't unclip the ram when the GPU is installed due to the extra few mm of the backplate. As long as I put the ram in first it works as the clips then move up out of the way allowing the GPU to fit. Hope that makes sense.

Yeah that makes sense, so it will just about fit then, the EVGA one that is.

Although, I have got my PC upgrade head on now, so have been frantically scouring sites, looking for the best upgrade path! :D
