Hi all - a bit stumped at what I should be looking for at the moment, have a few ideas in my head but looking for some inspiration for a reliable daily driver that's also not too old.

Criteria:
  • Price: £10k - I don't want to be scraping the barrel for high-mileage examples
  • Fuel: Petrol (no hybrid)
  • Gearbox: Automatic
  • 5 door (saloon, hatchback, SUV are all fine)
  • Has to be a) reliable and b) relatively cheap to fix/run
  • Not after anything that's too small or compact but at the same time not after a large car
Any ideas?

Too large?

Thanks for the suggestions all - will take a look. I was considering a Nissan Juke but they appear to have shocking reliability!
Seat Leon and Mazda 3 look to be a good shout

I would look at the latest model Honda Civic if you want reliability. If you want to do some research yourself then the advice sites listed on this cars page will help.

I doubt this would be cheap to run.

High reliability, low servicing/repair costs for the type of car. Is it just MPG that concerns you?

Is he going to get the latest civic for 10k? Anything other than a 1L higher mileage version? Kind of negates the "cheap to run" aspect, no?

It's the fact that it's a luxury car so I would imagine parts can be expensive, and yes, probably not great on fuel.

Yes he will get the latest Civic at not unreasonable mileage, and Honda's are generally good for reliability.

Ah, Lexus are very reasonable, and very reliable. So no real worries there unless you're on a tight wedge.

What do you think is "not unreasonable mileage" for the engine sizes within his price range?

Having a Leon as a company car and spent a fair bit of time driving Mazda 3's as rentals I'd say the Mazda 3 is the much better car out of these two. Not an option for me as the company car has to be an estate but if I was buying my own car now with your criteria I think a Mazda 3 would be near the top of the list.

I don't think Renault are to blame. Most of the Renaults aren't too bad. There are loads of old ones still going and they don't even seem to rust badly. It's Nissan which went off a cliff with their build quality.
