10k, which "hot" machine to get

Echoing the above sentiments, £10k will get you a nice 2002 330i facelift saloon:

Impreza sti?

you'll be lucky for 10k

all Blobeye (2003 - 2005) are at least 13~14k

you could get a jap import STI for 10k, but with it comes all the insurance hassles of owning an import car that some insureres will refuse to touch or wont have heard of.

My 2p's worth..

IMHO the 330Ci, of which there seem to be plenty on AT etc for £10K seems to be a good bet, it still looks fresh, and does not quite have the old man/slightly dated look of the E39 5 series..

Audi A6 2.7TT (My Brother is selling his for well under 10K, 320BHP, and despite what anyone says, I've had some real fun embarassing Focus ST's in it..) the engines seem bullet proof, and Warranty Direct warranty is reasonable and covers the Turbo's, although as long as the car has been on short service intervals, then this is never usually a problem..

I personally would class an ST220 as desireable and if i had a choice of a 53 plate 320 or 53 plate St220. I would take the ST allday everyday.

According to Top Gears review the ST220 is even more exclusive than an Aston Martin DB9 and obviously far more exclusive than any 3 series so i'd go for the ST220

How does this matter when the 3 is the better car? If image is really an issue, I think the BMW will win over the Ford.

Well yes. As mentioned above, it's better built, it's quicker, it's more powerful and it handles better. Further to that, it's RWD.

I don't see the merits of buying a car on the basis that there aren't many on the roads.

Daft as it is, I'd go for the Galant as well. Ugly, but it's the right ugly. And it's not just another BMW ;) Not the sensible choice though. Who buys cars with nothing but logic?

Have you driven both?

And the price difference?

I'd wager you could get an ST220 for much less than an equivalent age and spec level 3 series

In fact I recall it was compared to the equivalent priced 3 series which was a 318 and the ST220 bested it in all the areas mentioned.

Also it's better built - do you know that?
It's quicker and more powerful, well for a 330ci perhaps but that is one and the same thing and RWD isn't a plus for the average driver.

There are so many options. Personally i'd get neither sales rep mobile and take the Evo :p
