Just had my broadband upgraded to 10mb today by Virgin as a goodwill thing as we weren't over the moon about the recent Sky problems (they offered us £10 off a month or free upgrade to 10mb from 4mb, so I took the 10mb :D ).
Anyway, according to Virgin's website upgrade thing I'm on 10mb, and also according to the modem (silver one with ntl:home on the front, Ambit 100 is it?) it's set at 10mb, but I just can't get anywhere near the 10mb download speed.
To be honest my 4mb connection's been floating round about 410kb/s download speed when it should be about 460kb/s but still seems to only want to download at about 4.5mb speeds, if that.
I've seen some previous posts and on other sites about people saying they needed their silver modem upgraded but then other have said their modems are fine.
Not sure what to believe really, does it sound like mine needs upgrading to the blue ntl 250 modem?

Cheers :D

I had the same modem as yours for ages on 10MB. Then an NTL Engineer (friend of a friend) told me that the max you will get from one of those is 6MB on a good day - you need the new flat blue modem, Not sure of the name.
When i phoned NTL Customer Services they said it was fine, but i insisted that an engineer came to check it and when he saw it. The engineer just replaced it with the blue one and said if you need to upgrade the modems, you need to call out an engineer as CS dont know what there talking about.....
Call out an engineer & they will change it for you !!!

I just got upgraded to 10mbit by Virgin out of "good will" too, but also getting nowhere near 10mbit speeds.

I'm getting 7.2mbit max, and that's only from Virgin's servers. I still get 4mbit most other places. :(

I called Virgin and I got an tech support guy who talked to me like I wasn't a complete 'tard, and he did some line tests and said there was some noise on the UBR and that it has been documented since the 12th of this month and that I would get full 10mbit speeds once it had been seen to.

Might be the same problem for you.

P.S. I am using the black Motorola surf board, he said the modem was fine though.
