11 year old girl dies at drayton manor theme park

Is it just me who thinks that little ring in the middle is just too small in diameter? It should at least come up to your legs, a small child would have to lean forward to grab the handle and would barely be able to get any leverage to push their back into their seat.

I've been on this ride plenty of times as a young kid and adult, as long as you are sitting down even without holding the middle wheel you are not going to fall in

1 of my mates had a close call when we were 13 and played a silly games of swapping seats during the ride... which got us banned from going on again by the staff who saw it

Sadly from what is being said online it looks like this girl was trying to swap seats when the raft hit a rock and chucked her into the water, can't really see what else Drayton Manor could have done to avoid this

It's an absolute tragedy that has happened for the poor girl and her family

Likely that they will now introduce restraints rather than "let" people move freely on the rafts. Tragic story :(

yes, it is a shame that the girl lost her life, but now they will introduce OTT safety measures and it will ruin the ride. The enjoyment of those rapids style rides is the thrill of being 'open'.

So sad...one reason why I don't like going to theme parks anymore... just don't trust them!

Ah now... I think the girl stood up during the ride which was why she got flipped out of the boat. Sad all the same, but I think she disregarded one of the rules of the ride.

This unfortunately. They'll put restraints on everything, even on Squirrel Nutty in Alton Towers!

There are strict rules in places for a reason.

I feel sad that the child has passed away in an event such as this. But the park isn't to blame. That ride has been going for God knows how many years without incident.

I wonder what the parents will do :/

Sad and cruel - young girl just there to enjoy herself, impossible for a parents to process this sort of thing - your daughter never coming back from a school trip.

Obviously you've got water coming into the raft, people then get tempted to move seat because they're suddenly finding themselves sat in a puddle of water - possible I suppose that's what has happened here?

I didn't see that DM headline, pretty scummy tbh and smacks of "don't worry it's not a white child" sort of thing, they're an embarrassment.

Horrible thing to happen - also somewhat confused over what must have happened. Complete speculation, but if there was an odds lottery whereby something unusual happened to the raft, you would have thought more than one person would Be injured.

With the Australia accident, from memory, I gather the raft flipped or similar.

RIP anyway :(

Can certainly understand moving about as being the cause. I remember about 10 years ago I was at a smaller theme park and a young girl 7 or 8 lost half a foot. Think two smallest toes back towards the heel. It was on a ride which from my own experience I knew to have signs telling you to keep your arms and legs in all over the place and it even had a waist restrainer. She'd intentionally slid out of it and essentially it was her own fault but the park got reemed. It really does beg the question though of whether people will be held accountable for their own actions.

It is pretty foreseeable that if there were only children in the boat they will mess around. The park will get probably get slammed if they were let on without an adult / not enforcing obvious safety requirements. It'll all depend on the facts of course!

Wise up chaps.

The DM published the 'Muslim' bits of that story as pure click bait. They know full well it will get spread across the internet in outrage, generating traffic to their site.

They do it all the time (see Aaron Lennon story last week), later changing the headline to avoid the outcry spreading beyond the internet - it's no coincidence that the print edition doesn't reference the girl's religion.

Don't fall for it.

As for this incident: very sad

I've been going to Drayton Manor for about 26 years. That ride must be, I guess, about 20+ years old. Even assuming a low estimate of 1,000 rides per day, 120 days per year, that's about 2.5 million rides before this death - and probably much more in reality. It's a safe ride that unfortunately carries an element of risk when used incorrectly (standing)

I can't imagine them adding seatbelts - might introduce further risk with people being unable to operate them. They might increase age limits for unsupervised riding. Or simply increase the size of warning signs, and have staff reiterate "no standing!".

How common is it for Muslim Girls who go to Islamic schools to be taught to swim/be confident in water? :/
Not sure if you were tying to be daily mail esque or serious, but quite obviously the girls ability to swim has no bearing on the occurrence of the accident thus nothing to do with apportioning blame.

Also, it's river rapid - not a pool. Who knows an adult might not have survived.

Tragedy. But as been said i can't see them introducing restraints. Just in case of a freak accident and the whole thing flipping...

It's a safe ride.. Only possible safety measure I can think of is making individual wear life jackets?

Hardly the parks fault, according to the DM link an eye witness said she stood up to swap seats and then hit a rock and went over, as tragic as it is there's a reason why they tell you to remain seated.
