Hey all. Want to buy a new PC for my son, it will be used mostly for light gaming, nothing mega like brand new titles at 4k, but i want it to last a while.

I can build it if its worth getting the components individually. ive seen some decent looking full builds on OCUK with a 3060 which seems a good deal.....

Advice wanted please.

Nice build above. I'd probably drop in a 5600 instead of the 5500 but both are perfect for light gaming and maybe more. :)

Great choice of GPU, too.

That looks like a good build, thank you for taking the time. Would it maybe be a good idea to go for a slightly more powerful PSU? Iam not against an AMD card I've had plenty of ATI cards in the past I just though the nividia equivalent was better? Also I'll look at the 5600 CPU. What about a CPU cooler? The case looks nice I just don't want it too noisy.

Also what about windows? I have Windows 10 can I get 11 for free?

Ahh, I kept looking at the list thinking I'd forgotten something! Any Arctic cooling Freezer 2 240, 280 or 360mm will be good, the 360 might be overkill for a 5600 though.
Install W10 then upgrade.

I'd get the 3060tife over a RX 6700, as they're within £10 of each other...just saw the 5600X for £208 which isn't bad either, but also the 5600 for £168.
How old is your son by the way? Is he old enough to start tinkering with it and become a hobby etc? , or still young where it's just something to play on. If the later, may be cheaper going for an series x or ps5 (got xsx at home as round where we live they all play xbox, but worth checking as online gaming with friends is a big part of my kids socialising now)...so with mine, 2 xbox's and share a gamepass

Hi. He is 13 but he already has a PS5. He's always had a PC, he likes to play some games on Steam. His grandad is paying for it lol. Yeah i think iam looking more to a 3060Ti or even a normal 3060. No he wont tinker with it. I might though haha. Ive thought about getting one with a 3080 and he has my 2070S and i get the 3080, but they are such a rip off.

Ok, so 13 means he'll start to get more interested as he gets older, esp if friends start getting a pc. As budget was a bit higher, couple of other options
The bitfenix case can support a gpu up to 315cm in length if I'm reading that right. I'd potentially get a slightly bigger case. the lancool II supports up to 385 mm and the phanteks p400 is 415mm. just means in the future if you son gets into pc tinkering, and upgrades when he's older, he has potential to reuse case if he goes for a larger gpu..both the cases are on deals at the mo, phanteks reduced with a riser and vertical mount bracket thrown in, the lian li with an rm650 bundled
I'd consider getting the sn570 over the p2..the p2 quite an old drive now..the sn570 is faster too, but for me, the indurance is double and can withstand more knocks..you can get it for £70 also if want to shop around
My basket at OcUK:

Total: £290.72 (includes delivery: £0.00)

if youdon't want pc hardired, maybe get a board that has wifi thrown in....less clutter than buying an add on card.
Seen the B550 tuf gaming 2 wifi on offer for £149, and also seen 32 gb vengeance rgb rt 3200c16 for £112,
Other option is something like a msi b660m-a wifi board paired with a 12400f..upgrade path would be something like a 13600k in a couple of years

What's the difference between the 5600x and G? Which one do I want over the 5500?

Other than integrated graphics, the G is a slower part with a different core, much the same as the 5500 (which has lower clocks than the G). It is still Zen 3, but has half the L3 cache and performs a whole chunk (review) behind the 5600 non-X or 5600X. If you want a CPU that keeps up with modern CPUs and will take a GPU upgrade at some point, I'd definitely go with the 5600 / 5600X over the 5500 or 5600G, but there's obviously nothing to stop you taking the 5500 now and picking up a used upgrade in a few years.

A nice metric below..8min 45..shows the diff in games between a 5500 and 5600...apex legends, not much in it, but get down to things like forza horizon5, the 5500 is 18% slower..rainbox 6 seige, 32%...though OP son might be a bit young for that one...av was 14% slower compared to the 5600
