Thinking ahead for this years upgrade , Im puzzled about this GPU boost stuff , specifically on the 1155 Asus boards but generally to across the boards . Im running an 560ti 2gb . My question is because it seems unclear how this works .
Does the onboard graphics work to a point then there is a switch over , Say for example when you load a game when needs is greater .
Or does it compliment and kinda work in a sort of crude crossfire , sli setup together giving increased gaming FPS and smoother performance ?
I also have a 775 board that has onboard graphics , but that is disabled when you add a card , so its one or the other in case of the old 775 board , are the 1155"s or other new generation boards this kinda setup ?

Um, built in gfx is so slow there is no point running both in some sort of xfire...? Are you confusing some setup where the slow gpu is used for 2d and it switches to addin for 3d?

Yeah I guess i was kinda referring to the Z68 boards as those are the ones iv been reading up on , not sure if that does apply to the newer 2010 , and 1366 new chipsets .
Would it give, basically a roundabout way of the equivalent of a graphics card upgrade ?

ok a bit of reading suggests no big performance increases but its a way to get a few more % performance for free... thanks for the link rizo-uk ... i remember reading about that tech months (years?) ago.. I was wondering what happened to it..

Yeah thanks Rizo , was reading up all that , Sadly no great shake"r , Was Hoping it would be a cheapskate backdoor way of gaining a Graphics boost without upgrading the card .

On my board there are 2 ways of running Lucid Vrtu.

Hardware installation

3.1 i-Mode
i-Mode provides user with Intel Sandy special features and power saving options when no 3D gaming is used.

To use Lucid VIRTU solution in i-Mode, display must be always connected to Sandy Bridge motherboard video
output.
Note: Display can be also connected to IPG VGA output instead of IPG DVI output.

3.2 d-Mode
d-Mode is provided for demanding 3D gamers to achieve uncompromised 3D performance of discrete GPU
installed in the system. In this mode, Virtu allows user to utilize Intel special features such as trascoding, while
display is connected to discrete GPU.

Note: We recommend you use d-Mode for better 3D performance unless you use Intel Insider feature or the
power saving i-Mode.
If you use Lucid VIRTU solution with SLI / Crossfire feature, please select d-Mode.
We recommend you use d-Mode for Lucid VIRTU solution if your graphics card is equipped with dual
GPUs.
To use Lucid VIRTU solution in d-Mode, display must be connected to discrete GPU installed in the system.

still its a free upgrade..

remember integrated gfx are uber slow compared to addin... within the next few years I can imagine a situation where you buy an intel CPU with GPU built in, you stick your new ATI in, and the old Nvidia and all 8 CPUs on the intel cpu, and all the intel, ati and nvidia GPUs are used for 3d, when you close the game all GPU's power off and only the integrated GPU is powered on...
