Quick question.

I have an old i5 750 which is an LGA 1156 socket.
Can I use this in one of the new LGA 1155 socket boards with the upto date chipsets ie Z77 etc?

It seems a shame to bin what is still a reasonably good cpu. As if I can use it in a build with an 1155 socket mobo I will probably do that and get a newer i5 later on.

I really don't know how backwards compatable the newer boards are so advice is appreciated.

Your CPU will only work on 1156 socket boards (P55 chipset)

Only the newer Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge work with socket 1155 boards.

The i5 750 is still a very good cpu, i am running an i5 760 and have no plans at the mo to do what would be a pointless upgrade.

Try and pick up a board for it :)

Yeah, I'm happy with the chip which was why I was asking.
I think you can OC these too but will have to check on that.

Any recommendations on a good board?

I might put it into an ITX build if I can source a good board.

I am using a gigabyte h55m-ud2h which is a very good micro atx board.

Yes you can overclock an i5 750, i had one that i ran at 3.8ghz quite easily with a cheap air cooler.

For mini itx you can try and look for the zotac h55-itx or maybe better the gigabyte h55n-usb3.
