1156 vs 1366???

Is 1366 being phased out or it being maintained for the high end parts?

been out of the game for a few months and it's all bloody changed :S
 
1366 is Intel high end platform, it will never be phased out by socket 1156 core i5, what Intel have done is make a platform in core i5 that offers most users the chance to have a eight thread system that is affordable, it was never Intel's intention to make core i5 faster than socket 1366, but there was a big gap in the market from socket 775 to 1366 so this is why we have socket 1156 now.
 
Well, 1366 is your high-end, 8 thread, SLI/Xfire (16x PCI-E both lanes), triple RAM channel.

1166 is your mid-range, 4/8 thread, Single GPU (16x Single lane, 8x in SLI/Xfire mode), dual RAM channel option.

Yes, the 8-series Core i7s match and at times out-perform the i7 920, but the i7 920 is better for driving dual GPUS in SLI/Xfire (for reasons of the platform PCI-E channels if nothing else).
 
Hmm, i'm looking to update a mATX system that i will only ever use 1 gfx card in there. so perhaps a p55 mATX and i7 8 series may be teh proepr way to go. I was previously looking at the X58 based Asus GENE mobo.

It does a lot of encoding, i guess the triple channel RAM may be beneficial there.
 
remember the p55 series is for gamers and mainstream and for x58 enthusiasts video editers and loads of others till the i9 Arrives sometime late next year (hopes)

I would mainly be gaming and was looking to buy an X58 board for ages. All changed now with the P55s :)
 
the P55 Asus Gene looks sweet

remember they have only a single chipset cooler aswell as the memory and Graphics controller is onboard the CPU so they will run a lot cooler in a MATX environment
 
An i7 will always be faster for encoding regardless of memory because endoding is limited by the sheer power of the cpu.
 
If your planning on doing a lot of encoding and want an microATX board, then i'd give this one a look (here is a review). Its got plenty of extra features and overclocks very well. Couple this with an i7 920, 6GB DDR3 triple channel RAM and a good cooler- you will have an awesome platform for your needs.
