How rubbish is this engine going to be? (*considering I'm going from 123d / 320d M Sports)

Just picking my new company car and the tax saving on this vs the 120d Sport (or anyway of the x1's that are available) is big (£50 a month less tax, plus we get a monthly bonus for picking a car with under 100co2 emissions).

I can spec the 116d to the max as well, whereas with the 120d Sport I'd have to sacrifice the leather and xenon's but ho hum I suppose if the engine is bearable... :)

Ty motors :)

Its more than driveable, a lot here are going to moan and groan about it being slower than a boat to China but unless its like 300bhp and 0-60 in 4 secs they'll never be satisfied. As a normal everyday car its perfectly ok. I had one as a courtesy car when my 330D (at the time) was in for service and had no complaints.

Thanks mate. Worried that the speed will bother me, trying to arrange a test drive.

For me if the 116d was powerful enough to be comfortable on the motorway then I would go for the better specification internally.

It's a company car, it's free as long as it gets up to speed don't worry about it :)

My Astra isn't at all fast in anyway shape or form, but it's not mine so I don't care, it gets up to speed, It will crack a ton and is reasonably quiet at 80 and handles quite well.

It's quite an impressive little car the 116d (other than the new one being horribly ugly). Doesn't feel lacking in power at all imo - obviously it's not really comparable to the engines with higher outputs but the car's fine overall, for the stated output it drives well.

It's quite slow, I use my brothers 116D company car regularly. It's bearable and I would pick it over the 120 if it saves you £600 a year + bonus. Especially if the interior is nicer!!

They have the same engine in the new 3 series as well, although I'm not sure how kerb weight compares but I'd imagine the 3 series is heavier.

Learn to chill, relax in the seats, and enjoy the best steering in it's class. I really like the 1 series, and thought it was much better to drive than any competing cars.

Personally I do think the 116d is slow. Not compared to a Veyon, just.. it's slow. The engine simply isn't powerful enough and has been deliberately strangled for company car tax reasons. I've driven a few and they annoy me to death in ways that the 120d or even 118d simply doesn't. You often end up subconciously driving it far harder than you otherwise would just to join motorways safely or keep up with traffic pulling away which gives the economy a real hit.

I honestly dont agree but it depends on your expectations. Compared to the dog that is the 105 tdi in vag cars the 116d is a revelation. Its on a par with the psa 110 hdi imo, another engine that I feel is impressive for its given output. It is a slower car than the 118 or 120 but its easy to forget that the performance on offer from both those variants is actually very impressive for the stated power output (comparing diesels only)

It's not slow; pretty average acceleration to 60. On the plus side fuel consumption is very low.
You could get another more exciting car for the weekends.

In relation to what? A 335D or a 1.2L Micra? Its not a 'slug' by any means and is as good as any everyday car for everyday driving.

Not in relation to anything. In general it's very slow.

Every time I drive it, I find myself having to plant my foot to the floor in any gear to find any sort of "decent" forward momentum. I would only find it acceptable in company car form, where you get £££ discount by less emissions. I certainly would not recommend to a perspective owner as the 120D will offer much better power delivery for a fraction of the cost of running it.

It does 0-60 in 10.5 seconds and has a top speed of 120mph.

It offers more than acceptable performance for day to day road use.

For a company car it is almost exactly what you want, not a lot of tax, economical and it can rattle along comfortably at 80 on the motorway.

And it's not rapey expensive either.

It has 84 HP/ton... that's really quite slow, the 0-60 times boosted by short gear ratios and RWD aside. My first ever car at 18 had 84 HP/ton.
