11Ghz processor anyone?!

The mods may choose to move this as technicaly it's a news story. However, as it relates directly to microchip technology, I thought this may be a relevant thread to put it in.

Could be old to some of you, but I've only just come across the article. Makes for interesting reading.

Transistor clocked at 110Ghz!

The scientists seem to think they could potentially produce 11Ghz processors by using this manufacturing process in the transistors. Early days yet though and it's still not the long term answer to the dilemma of reaching threshold speeds in current silicon based microchips.
 
Note, these are very simple transistors therefore will be able to do pretty much nothing in terms of logic (a cpu is basically an insanely complex transistor). Hopefully they can get it to work on a large scale or something, otherwise it's nothing special.

Yeah, well - my dad's got one even faster! He keeps it in the garage and won't let anyone else see it! :rolleyes: :p ;)


I would have thought that for any of these transistors to work, they would have carried out the testing under supercooled conditions (or at least very chilled). So in normal operating environments they may not be as impressive. Would still have to be faster than anything else currently around though.

yes that was apparently on nitrogen but they said that it can achive speeds of 350ghz on air

i thought a cpu was just lots of transistors essentially. and therefore this same technique can be applied to the manufacture of desktop cpu's?!?
 
cooling a single transistor on air, and cooling some 300 million all next to each other in a hot case with a limited space for cooling at acceptable sound levels are so far away from each other in limits that that single 350Ghz transistor would simple melt, blow up or cause a paradox that ends the universe as we know it if it were run next to 300 million others in a 150mm^2 sized package.
 
soon as we make chips out of room temperature super-conducting materials, clock speeds will shoot up so much, AMD/intel clocked at 50Ghz on your laptop :p

apparently this is referring to the radio waves frequency or something, was on slashdot ages ago.

:rolleyes: lol me thinks the BBC needs to learn the difference between RF bands and actual CPU cycles.
 
Yes! Yes! I need an 11GHz CPU (with better IPC than Conroe) so that I can calculate Pi to a million decimal places in under 5 seconds and other useful things.

Sometimes, the PC hardware market reminds me of Top Trumps.

I want a cpu that will calculate pi to 1m decimal places faster than my eye can blink! ;) :D
 
Small minded fools! You should all want a CPU that can run an infinite loop in one clock cycle!

This might cause reality to essentially turn inside out. But hey, I'd risk reality for that CPU :D
