Hi,

Would you consider a 12month contract over a 18month if the overall price had a £10 difference?

I'm asking because the sony x1 on vodafone would mean the 12month will be approx £50 p/m and 18month approx £33.

Is the only pro the fact you can upgrade sooner?

It's really down to whichever you can afford each month.

The 12 month contract will cost you £600 and you can upgrade in 12 months time.
The 18 month contract will cost you £594 but you'll have to wait 18 months before you can upgrade.

If you can afford the £50 per month then obviously the 12 month deal looks better as you are tied in for less time and will get yet another new phone sooner.

I've had a couple of 18 month contracts now (no other options really but I would have preferred the 12 month contracts) and they've offered me upgrades after 9 months on both and that just resets to a new 18 month contract. It would appear to be moving closer to the system in the States as I understand it (you sign up for say 3 years and get X number of handset changes in that time). In case it matters this is with O2 at the Carphone Warehouse.

You can upgrade after 9months, who is that with if you dont mind me asking?

I'm leaning towards the 12month in my situation.

I'd go for the 18 months... The price difference is just too much in my opinion. I mean 12 * £50 = £600... 12 * £33 = £396. I know you wouldn't be able to leave after 12 months but none the less I wouldn't be able to justify £204 increase over the same time span... An extra £12 per month? I couldn't warrant it. Having said that, I'm not somebody that upgrades my phone a lot... (Though I often wonder if data charges will be become much cheaper within the 12 months, meaning that over the following 6 months you are tied in to paying well over the odds for the service...)

Im onto my second 18 month contract now. I cancelled the first one 3 months early with a penalty charge, but only because T mobile failed to give me a signal in my own home, it wasnt that I was twitching for an upgrade.

It's an O2 phone from Carphone Warehouse, I don't know if it is a standard O2 policy to let you upgrade or not but that is how it has worked out for me. I'm not on a particularly high value contract so I don't have complete freedom in choice of phones but it is still pretty decent.

You have insurance with carphone warehouse? Their insurance policy lets you just give the phone back after 9 months and they pay off the contract..

Not me, I've not bothered with the insurance, I just upgraded and kept the phone. Dunno how it works out but that's what happened for me. :)
